Ha! " I do however enjoy taking risks and breaking artistic rules ;)"
Well said Grace!
You Rebel with a paint brush!
Gracie Lu! I did not know you could paint? I love the blues here and the way the colors blend in Perfect harmony. You have nice Highlights and movement in your creation of the Aurora Borealis.
Like the small lone cabin and trees.
Gracie the painter? Who knew?!!
Nice work ;)

Thank you Sange :) I am flattered. I TRY to paint! I am not really all that good at it, but I really like the feel of the brush and oil paints moving around on the canvas, and the cool textures that can be created - and the satisfaction of it coming together with some sort of semblance. I need more practice and never seem to have the time. And I am really critical when it comes to my painting - its never good enough for my eyes! I always want it to look more realistic than I can manage :)

I love how there appears to be movement in this painting. The lights are really captivating and draw the eye downward to the trees and cabin. Makes you feel as if you're actually standing there and taking it all in. Nicely done. :)

Bravo for your bravery! It makes a super impression, the swirling look to the aurora is exciting to imagine, the blending strokes within each is dimensional and internesting. On first glance i didn't really see the trees, and so i was concerned about the dark patch extruding into the snow on the right side. If you would take a look at this, you may agree or disagree!! Good luck in the contest. The jaunty little cabin is a nice 'man is small' statement.

Well I certainly understand those feelings. This is a great place to explore and feel out the community. For a first experience, I'd say you nailed it! I really can feel the movement in those strokes. I love the color choice and the trees are wonderful. Very dainty. The snow is great and shadowed nicely too. Well done. Be proud.

I think this was a good risk. Excellent results. I love the blues and reds intertwined and swirling to give the impression of a whirlwind. Great composition, focus and colorful palate. Nice job. thank you so much for sharing.

An interesting initial impact.
Visually soothing with its
fine features & textures.
At least this is 51% BLUE!
Diffused focusing with a low lit reproduction.
Creative concept. Innovative approach. Imaginative presentation.
Best of luck in the contest! Thanks for sharing...

You have no formal training and you can create art like this? A gift such as you have been given needs to be nurtured and do not ever stop. I'm speaking from experience for I am a wannabe artist but my teacher told me "before you can paint , you need to learn how to draw" so I stopped....and take pictures.

I have camped and lived in Aurora Borealis country and your image is quite realistic but with a flair of grandness. I can hear the crackle of your art. Tolstoy said that if a piece can pull out an emotion then art has been created. Your art ressurects memories of Canada for me.

Your drawing is excellent and I will tell you why. Our teacher always used to talk about tonal ranges...that you need black to white and many tone colours ...and the more you have the more vibrant your image becomes to the viewer. You have that tonal range. I also see shadows in the snow and that makes it more realistic.

You seem to marry realism and surrealism in this piece.

Your cabin was composed with thought to placement and is in that all important grid line. There seems to be a bit of a lean to the right on the cabin tho'.

I am not big on borders, never quite know if I like them or not. I feel, because you are showing vast beauty that this oval frame doesn't work (for my eyes) . I want to see this HUGE but I bow to your artistic prerogative.

I have put up an abstract contest for digital artists and traditional artists...Purple n Pink combo. Please have a look and it would be delightful to see an entry from you.

Thank you so much for the in-depth review. It is very helpful and much appreciated. I cant draw very well myself (wish I could) but I like the potential with oil painting. I'm not so thrilled about the leaning cabin myself! I think you are right about the frame too, but once I started with it there was no turning back. I have tried to recreate this without a frame and have not liked any attempts as much as this one. Again, thank you for your insightful feedback and your positive encouragement!
