I really appreciate your photo because I have photographed, unsuccessfully, blue herons in flight and know the challenges of getting the whole bird in your frame! The feathers are well focused, and the dripping water from the feet add a lot of action. The gold reflection in the water is a bonus! Wonderful image.

I think the strong backlight was in your favor on the photo. Nothing is blown out. The bird is very, very sharp which I think you would have lost in strong lighting, especially the water at it's feet. The reflective colors tells us it is fall and make the bird stand out more. Not distracting just giving a reference to the time of year. Contrast is good motion stoppage is great. Exceptional job for the lighting situation.

Every once in a while, opportunities are given under perfect conditions. The capture is worth the minor distractions. The action has been frozen for close inspection. Taking advantage of a rare opportunity is the sign of a great photographer. Nice work.

Great image - the dulled tones of the heron against the warm sun on the trees is effective, the still capture of the water as it lifts is very good, i cant see on the image but the head looks slightly blurred guessing the focal point was on the centre of the body?

This is a great capture as this wonderful creature lifts off to a journey unknown. It creates a mystical feeling that lingers. The background effects doesn't matter, it is the feeling it creates that makes this a winning capture. Nice work.

A beautiful bird nicely photographed. As you mentioned, the background is strong. Almost overpowering. The bird itself, colors look true, i like the splash around its feet. The head, a wee bit out of focus. A nice capture for difficult circumstances.

Great natural capture. Vivid detail of wings and feathers. A hint of fall color appears in the water reflection. I agree that lighting made this shot difficult, but you can't control that. I believe a faster shutter speed would have benefited this photograph as the subject was in motion, The water coming off the birds legs would have been sharper. A great photo nonetheless.

This truly is a work of art. I especially like the way you captured the water dripping off the feet indicating clearly that this is a taking off. Good color and crisp definition to the bird and the reflection color is very nice. Great angle too.

a nice contest entry, as the heron has great detail in it's feathers as it takes off as you timed it just right as the water falls.
a very nice shot to view. thank you for sharing. good luck.
