Thank you for your nice comments and for digging through my portfolio to get at this one! I was lucky to get a clear one with how windy that day was! But I probably should have tried to edit out the distracting reed near his leg, yet I thought the stance was unusual :) Many thanks!

I was quite torn between 5/6 for some time when I considered your shot. The fundamental problem I had was whether the image was bright enough. Then I decided that your shot contains so much gorgeous and enjoyable detail that I simply had to 6 it! Very well done!!

Thank you very much! You are too kind. I need to get some experience post editing so I can remove that blade of grass near the leg with confidence. Thank you for the sixth star.

Why do they stand on one leg?
I like the windswept capture.
A cute & candid shot.
He stands out against the withered reeds.
Fine features & textures.
Fantabulous colors.
Subdued lighting! Nice perspective & narrow DOF. Thanks for sharing...

Thank you for taking a look! I think the one leg thing is something they do to keep them warm.

Well Sweet Grace!
It is a about time you RAISED that shutter speed on bird photography!!
Yippppeeee!
Fine focus, great eye clarity, nice white balance control and fab stop action on the long plumes and mating fluff blowing in the wind.
Looks like you found a female in breeding colors and head plumes.
When they stand on one leg it is to keep warm.
I would have removed the upside down V shaped grass by its left leg.
I have studied and documented Great Blue Herons for over 12 yrs now.
From Birth to adulthood.
They are one of my favorites to observe hours on end at the Wetlands.
Nice work Grace.
I challenge you to raise that shutter even higher next time you find a Heron.
Nice work!!
;)

You are so funny! I was wasn't sure if this was a female so with your experience I will take your word. That same grass was bugging me too but I worried that I would mess this one up if I tried to edit it out. Post processing isn't one of my strong suits. I know it would be a breeze for some people. I see a lot of amazing examples of it on this site that I am considering but I haven't much time to really experiment in that department :)
