Very nice work Grace.

It is truly amazing to see these guys doing what they do. The stance is excellent and the overall job is very pleasant to view.

Well I stand like this all the time Grace....lol...and had no idea it was to conserve body heat!

Just wonderful crisp sharp focus. Wow but the detail in those feathers is superb. Actually, he's well detailed from head down to that single foot. Love the eye and the texture you've shown of wet vs dry feathers. Colors look true and natural to me. It's well cropped and LOVE your title.

Looks like a well considered shot....wonderfully executed. Really fine work here Grace.

a nice capture, Envision.
as the blue heron is a bit different to me having a lot of white to it.
as it has great clarity as I view the very long hair on the chest and it's face. as it is funny one leg conserving heat as I have collected a few in the past months. a pleasure to view. thank you.
always,
ron

Nice Capture of this Great Blue Heron resting Grace. No matter what anyone here thinks the bird is doing or not doing. Your notes are correct. Birds do not stand on one foot Just because. Birds are amazing heat engine machines. They have to produce lots and lots of calories. This flying business consumes a lot of energy. But when they are resting their metabolism drops, as a mean to save energy, for example in the night, very few birds are active during the night.
The bird's body is covered by feathers. Feathers are awesome contraptions to insulate,
But there is a weak point... the bird's legs are not covered with feathers, so they lose heat at a higher ratio than the rest of the body.
Another reason is the structure of the bird's leg. Those legs have an special ligament, that goes around the leg in the outer part of it. When the bird flexes the leg, the ligament pulls the toes (or claws) closed. Because of that birds are more comfortable actually docking than standing. It is the human equivalent of sitting.
You have nice focus, fine eye clarity and great feather details.
I would only suggest you
De-saturate yellow a tad.
Fine shot Grace of a bird I have studied and documented from bird to adulthood for over 11 yrs now.

    Thank you very much! I like all your knowledge about these birds and your willingness to share it!
    I think when I increased the contrast the yellow became more pronounced so I probably should have de-saturated it some -but I like the lemony color! I'm a sucker for yellow so it was a completely biased decision to leave it lemony :) The more I look at it now though I do see that it may be too much. Supergold basically said that too.

    He deducted points...I did not...I leave it to artists choice..

Nice shot! You capture the details in the bird's feathers and leg. The sun on the water made it look like a beach rather than water.

A very nicely composed shot with nice detail in the eye and great colors. The one legged stance is quite common and I have seen it during times of the year when conservation of heat is not an issue.

Wow! This should be a 6 for charm, color & overall impact!
Why do they stand on one foot? Alternate support?
Pin sharp focused.
Subtle lighting.
Narrow DOF.
Thanks!

A quite lovely bird shot posted here! Your slightly off-centre composition works nicely in a traditional style. The image is sharp and well exposed. Just wondering what is causing the yellow patches in the background. Nice work!

    Thank you! The yellow is the sun reflecting on the water. I think when I increased the contrast the hue saturated more than I probably should have let it - but I kind of liked the lemony hue :) Thanks again for viewing!

    I meant to include that the sun was reflecting on the algae on the water.

a great portrait Grace with perfect framing and sharp focus;
however I never understnd the reason to oversaturate some colors; the sky loks like lemon juice and even some feathers of the blue heron are yellow;
