Bird with a horn!

We both know focus is soft here but I don't know if you had to shoot through glass or a fence. I know this, I spent 20 minutes trying to capture a male and female nest building two weeks ago. But they were in a enclosure with square fencing which is harder to make disappear when shooting. The female was in a large old wine barrel they attached to a tree. The male was bringing her nesting material. I needed to be able to walk backwards 3 more steps to make the fence disappear. But we were on a bridge...So no shots. :(
So I will enjoy yours..It actually shows better when you click to see the better quality image.
Camera techs seem fine, so my guess is it's enclosure was the challenge.
Anyway..You got the entire bird in the shot and I can now see what I was missing when we saw one.
Nice work Grace ;)

    Thank you :) There is netting all around their enclosure. Wish you could have got your shot, that sounds like a nice image. Thank you for the 15th review on this one too!

OMG Grace but that is just one crazy looking bird! Your notes, btw are perfect!! So good to read a little something about what I am looking at.

LOVE that you photographed him from this angle and how accommodating he was to turn his head so you could include a shot of that most unique feature. Focus on his body and tail is very good. You've detailed wonderfully those wing feathers most especially even to showing the texture...soft and satiny smooth. Focus on head, beak and horn is just a tad soft. Colors are good...again the body being just about perfect but color good throughout. It is well exposed and your long, lean format is just a perfect way to frame him....oh and eye is good too. Even managed a bit of sparkle there.

Wow...is he unusual....definitely the first time I've seen anything like this.....and ALWAYS enjoy seeing something brand new Grace.

What a wonderful capture of this fellow - have never seen this bird. Very grand fellow!!! I'd give the head a bit of sharpening but other than that this is a fabulous shot. No zingy... so close to perfection. Would have been a sixer for me - almost there. Great color and lighting - what a grand capture. Thanks for sharing.

a good close up of this strange and ugly bird;
sharp focus on the feathers, just a tad soft on the bill; excellent exposure control for the B&W;

Very impressive shot of this fabulous (and quite unique to me) looking bird. I love that you took the photo from its backside (I favor backs over fronts) and of course managed to capture him (Are those red eyes?) perfectly with that entire bill. Looking down at him or straight at him or even up at him would not have been the photo of choice. What you took....the side view of his head....that was the best way. Filling the entire frame with him makes this photo top notch. Everything about this photo.....from lighting to focus; from positioning of the subject within your frame to post editing; from color to contrast to shadow to highlights.....ALL are top notch. Excellent shot. Thanks for sharing.
And thank you for your artist's notes. Appreciate that VERY much so.

    Thank you very much for your in depth comments and rating! I appreciate it. Yes, those are red eyes :) The only difference between the male and female is the color of the eyes. The males have red eyes and the females have white ones.

Quite a weird and exotic, to me, presented here! Your composition being full and central gives us an excellent full length look at the bird. The image is sharp and exposure fine. Perhaps it could be a little brighter? Otherwise, very nice work!

A very interesting bird. Beautiful in a strange way. I love the white tailfeathers with their black stripe. It reminds me of a sweater my mother used to wear. A wonderful photograph.

    Thank you! I thought the tail was interesting too and now that you mention it, it does have a sweater quality!

I have seen some Hornbills in S. Africa but never this amazing specimen as its local to where you mention. Wonderful study with side look to accentuate its make-up. Marvellous detail and clarity set against broad leaf plant. Nature certainly brings up some innovative ideas and shapes. One thing about this bird ,it will never need to shelter from rain with this permanent waterproof hat. Super photograph. Sorry ran out of sixes.
