I usually don't like art that looks like a photo - I know that sounds crazy. A lot of us work so hard to make a drawing, or using some other medium, that looks almost real, right? So I don't know why I respond that way. But, your work blew me away. I had a black cat, Merlin, who I loved like a family member. You captured this subject so well, and I would love to know how you did the light behind the eyes! Beautiful. We lost our last cat a couple of years ago and for the first time, I am without a cat. Just my dog. Anyway, as an artist who loves cats as subjects, well done.

Thanks so much, Lee, for your lovely review. I put several layers of different colours of pastels in the eyes but I have to say that the uploads of pastel paintings often aren't very good - don't know why but it can be very frustrating! I too have always been a cat lover and over the years we've had many. My three grown up children are also cat lovers and all have them in their homes. Suzanne

The details you have drawn are fantastic. I could count the single hair. I know from experience that it is extremely difficult to paint a black animal on a black background, so I can really appreciate what you have done here and the attention you paid to accurate detail. There is a slight glare over the entire drawing. I guess this is happen when you uploaded the drawing. I happened to some of my pictures too. I am not sure what caused it, nor how to fix it.

Many thanks, Sean, for your very nice review. Yes, we've had many black cats over the years - I know in some countries they are considered to be unlucky but not so here! Suzanne

You're very welcome,Suzanne! I've never gone in for that 'black cats are unlucky' nonsense either!

Gorgeous portrait of Rik and
beautifully done in chalk pastels. I love how you created light and shadows and depth in this image. Such incredible art work with your details of the fur, whiskers and those stunning eyes. A creative and talented art work and good memory of your loyal cat. Your background in the black accentuate this piece beautifully. This is outstanding work and thanks for sharing! Congratulations on lst place!

What an amazing drawing! Your style is just awesome. The texture of the cat's fur is done beautifully and the depiction of light on the fur and in the eyes is just magical! Awesome job!

A beautiful tribute drawing of your cat. It reminds me of my daughter's cat. Who is very attached to her. Great highlights drawn on it. Congratulations!

A beautiful close up of this well titled photo of your cat Rik - despite the slight blur it is a wonderfully positioned shot and the eyes are incredible; not too much exposure and just the right lighting, in vivid contrast to the expression and colour of his face - a true creature of the night shot!! great work :)

Congratulations on your well deserved win in this contest. I think the colors are excellent and those penetrating eyes are well are well complimented by the detail in the nose and whiskers.
