LOL, these guys just make me laugh! Such great character. Most drawing to my eye is the unique vantage you captured the shot, head on with a shift of the head as well as the rich framing of dark mystique to offset your subject. Beautiful colors in his plumage and eye. Strong textural richness in the bill and his head.

Thank you for your nice comments and for digging this one out of my portfolio. I actually developed quite a crush on this guy :) They are so funny looking and this one seemed to take a liking to me and kept posing. He really is full of character. He has given me a whole new appreciation for their unique features. Thank you!

This is excellent Grace.. A scientific capture showing much detail...with a hint of artistic flair and a bit of humor...at least in the bird's expression.

I like the black bg... a lot! And I like what your f stop has done with the body of the bird. Colors are attractive throughout...and that's about the best compliment I can give this guy....except that he looks like he would be fun to hang around with..! :D Great job!

Thank you very much! I also did some playing around with spot metering to try to get a portrait studio light and background effect. I had a lot of fun photographing this bird. I kind of developed a crush on him :) Thank you for the great review!

Your focus is so so sharp. The dark background highlight's the spoonbill. But it is the light, high lighting his back and bill. That's what drew my attention. to look further. POV is also good.

Envision this take is marvelous, simply shut ma' mouth marvelous. If someone ever ask you to show them what great DOF is - show em this. The fine detail of the spoon bill, head and that expressive eye with the catch light simply shatters me.

The black background is a perfect contrast to the overall coloration of the bird - pink and black work so well together.

I only have 1 six left and I am delighted to award it to you for this piece ... B-)) Bob

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Atta Girl Gracie!!!
Your use of Light is superb here.
I LOVE the low key style giving it a studio portrait look.
The head on view is Outstanding!
It's unique and it works because your selective focus is on the eyes, head and that Looooong Spatula styled bill.
The softness at the end of the bill is due to their skimming from side to side in the water for hours on end.
You captured the softness at the end and the textured part closer to head perfectly.
I think many over thought this due to the fact they never seen or know anything about this spiecies.
I like that you are stretching your camera settings...Growing in learning Kelvin Scale and UNDERSTANDING that lighting is everything in photography.
Excellent bird capture Grace!
;)

Interesting notes about the color - all our spoonbills are white so obviously aren't o the same diet. Love the face on view of this bird showing the spoon shaped bill clearly. The eye appears to pop out. Your focus and other technicals are excellent. :) Mary
