A visually appealing portraiture with a soft chiaroscuro effect.
Selective focusing with his nostrils being the sharpest!
Effective illumination spotlighting the fine facial features & fluffy textures.
Excellent semi diagonal framing.
A good entry for Birds or Light
Contest.
Thanks for sharing...

Grace, you caught this guy so nicely!

The colors are awesome and we can see the varied colors throughout his whole body. He eye is bright red as well as a lot of birds are. Facial features are wonderful with that great spoonbill in forefront and clarity.

Wonderful job my friend.

A great portrait of this Roseate Spoonbill standing out from it's dark background is long spoon shaped bill held up so we can examine it in detail. Beautiful composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.

ahahaha..oh what a face. You certainly know how to photograph these unusual animals Grace. I really enjoy your 'in your face' images. Good notes again too.

Perfect focus on that 'face'...now the body...did you use some sort of filter? I see you say experimenting w/ light and ISO but that's not what I mean. The body looks softer....sort of like the 'painterly filter' I see many MM people use. I actually sort of like the crispness of the head and softness of the body....just curious. The body colors are marvelous but the detail of the head...eye etc. are what are most striking.....especially w/ that dark background. The end of his spoonbill looks a tad bright to me and not quite sure if it's you or him....lol...know what I mean??

Most definitely an interesting looking fellow. You DO have an eye for showing us your animals up close. This looks like another well considered shot....I like the body...just wonder if the end of the bill should not be quite as bright??

Thank you very much for your detailed comments :) I do like to get the in your face shots!
I didn't use any filters, don't have any, and I didn't edit it, other than cropping. I used all manual settings and adjusted the white balance using Kelvin Scale while taking the shot. I used a high ISO and fast shutter speed - with a low aperture to get the softness of his body. I wonder if the brightness you are seeing on his bill is water....there are water droplets on his mouth, barely noticeable but they kind of shine. I'll take a closer look! The environment was actually very bright so my ISO may have been too high. I generally prefer the 400 - 800 range but I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. I appreciate your attention to detail too! Thank you again.

no no Grace...not the end of his bill. The top flat part...near the end but as I mentioned it may be exactly the way their bills are made. I'm not familiar AT ALL w/ these guys. I went back and looked more closely at your settings and I'm sure you're right about lower aperture and higher ISO and his body...actually exactly what I sometimes do w/ my flowers. I didn't think you ever used filters....more of a traditionalist (me too) and should have studied your settings more closely. Anyway, you are most welcome for the review. I am just loving your 'in your face' images! Way to go!

Oh - his spatula! I think the ISO added more noise there than I care for, but it looks the color it is supposed to be. I wonder if the noise doesn't put the texture off some and that is what you are noticing. He isn't perfect, but he's alright and your feedback is nice and tons appreciated. I have to stop zooming in over 600% lol! I haven't used filters but I have seen some use of them that piques my interest. I might try them some day for the fun of experimentation. And - your flower settings are always perfect!

spatula...lol...well of course that is what it would be called....and you may be exactly right about the noise that was giving me pause....not color.

A real good looker with its spatula shaped dining tool. Love the way you emphasise the length and shape with those two nostrils leading to the eye bulging out like a red and black button. Poor thing it even has a bald head and baggy eyes.At least the roseate colours give it a chance with its dress sense. Wonderful head on take with body fading into black background.

A very nice shot. The only time I ever saw them in the wild I could not get within a hundred feet of them. I can only assume this is a captive. It is certainly a fine shot though. Great colors and fine focus on the eye.

Thank you! I have never seen them in the wild either. I did just read that they have a bunch of them at the "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuse in Florida.

An interesting bird. This is a great photograph. I love the colors. So soft and yet vibrant against the darkness. Great angle on the spoonbill.

Thank you! I agree, I think their features are highly interesting. :)

This is a wonderful portrait of this bird! Great, straight on view of its beak, head, and body. The lighting is nicely concentrated on the head of ht bird (was this taken in a museum of some kind?). Good clarity shows the details in its face and feathers.

Thank you! I took this at the MN Zoo -the only place I get to see any half-way exotic creatures. He was actually very friendly with me and seemed to want my attention :)
