He does indeed look very cute. I like that expression, as if he is in deep thoughts. You have him drawn with great attention to realistic detail and color. Especial the eyes and the reflections in them are intriguing. The textured light background brings the colors of the poppy out well. I understand that the paper size recommends the format, but you might consider to frame a tad more generous in future portraits. I find the frame a bit to tight above and below.

Many thanks, Cleo, for your kind review and advice. I usually find that I run out of space on the paper! Suzanne

    You're most welcome!
I have run out space even on digital canvas; since than I mark the place where the subject should be with a thin line which I cover with paint when I finish the painting. Maybe you could do something similar on paper. :o)

Thanks, Cleo, for your ideas. I just get carried away. I usually start with the eyes and try to put marks where other features should go but somehow it doesn't always work! Suzanne

I know. Our models often don't obey to us. I always do the eyes last, but it is easier for me because I do not have to be true to just one photo. I was never able to paint a photography exactly as it is. Cleo :o)

Oh I agree this little guy is just the cutest Suzanne.

Such a shame about the upload though....it has the pastel colors appearing almost as if there's a mist over the entire image. I do like how well detailed you've drawn him though and especially love the wonderful sparkle you given the eyes. Makes him look like the sweetest little imp! lol He would get away w/ anything at my place!

Glad you included the notes Suzanne and good for you for your determination and spunk w/ pastels.

Deborah

A lovely, soft picture of this cute cocker spaniel puppy. Drawn very accurately and in great proportion, colours are spot on, and the image captures the expression of the pup well - a really nice picture.

An absolutely beautiful fellow - such a grand capture for me in his fabulous cuteness. Love the movement of his fur over his ears and face. Great capture in the lighting of those eyes as well. He is sooooo adorable. Thanks for sharing.

This is not the first time I have seen pastels lose their punch. A friend of mine who has used pastels before mentioned it has something to do with coarseness of the pigment grains. So I take that into consideration when I review pastel work.

Your work with pastels is very good. Catch lights in the eyes and a wet nose.
Excellent detail of the ears and its whiskers around the snout.

This is a very, very good rendering of a cute puppy ... B-)) Bob

Thank you very much for your very nice review and understanding. I'm sure your friend is right about the coarseness of the pigment grains. It's very frustrating! Suzanne

You have done such a nice job with the colors and details of the fur. I especially like the way you have made the eyes come to life with the highlighted glints of light that created such real looking pupils. His little nose and mouth are so cute too.

Excellent choice of subject.
Fine facial features & soft fur textures.
Subtle illumination.
A bit underexposed, my friend.
Try shooting it with ample lighting to achieved the real colors of the medium used.
Nice pet portrait! Look at those eyes--cute as buttons!
Subdued colors.
Compact framing.

Thanks for sharing...

Many thanks for your nice review, Dick, and for your advice. I always shoot in natural light and it was a bit of a dull day here when I took the shot. Not like that where you live! Suzanne
