a fantastic close up of this impressive butte, one I apparently missed when visiting Monument Valley;
excellent angle and capture with sharp focus;

An amazing piece of rock you have managed to photograph it giving it the very best composition for the most impact possible with very fine detail.The dull sky actually makes it stand out more which is a bonus.

How the rock formation is is presented in a steep, low angle against the cloudy sky is impressive. The shot is throughout sharp in spite of the apparently gloomy light beneath the overcast sky. The photo seems compost using the rule of thirds knowingly and creative.

I have never heard of this mountain before but it looks quite spectacular. I am not too sure how large this butte is but maybe you could have included some people in the photograph to give the mountain a sense of scale. It would have been interesting to know when you took the picture (I mean the time of year) as the sky seems none existent. I remember at one time my photographs would end up with a lifeless sky but if you add a neutral density filter to the front of your camera you would get a lot more detail in your sky. Alternatively you can do a similar thing with your photo editing software. I am sorry I sound a bit negative, but I remember when my pictures came out just like yours and then I discovered how to use neutral density filters. One of my golden rules is, if you can get a detailed sky everything else will fall into place. Hope you take this review in a positive manner. Paul.

    The title of the photo is not the name of the butte! It is simply the title I chose!! I took the shot on 18/10/14. Being in a vast desert it's not easy or simple to get something to create a sense of scale. Generally I do not use neutral density filters. In terms of software editing I did not feel that further specialist editing on the the sky was necessary as I thought it was fine. I am grateful though for your very detailed review and ideas, much appreciated!

This is gorgeous! I love the National Parks in Arizona and Utah. Normally I find shots of these structures look best with a clear blue sky, but in this case the clouds give the scene a more artistic look. Well done!

    Many thanks for your nice review! I was only there fore one day and it was cloudy at the time I took this shot. I do have other photos, taken at different times to this one and they do have blue skies. Some have already been posted on this site and I will be posting more in the future!

This is a beautiful photo! I like the positioning in the frame and the color tone of the sky in the background. I think it sort of has a mysterious quality to it. Very nice work!

It really must be something to see a sight like this! It's kind of resembles some cigars standing on end. LOL You have a combination of great lighting, focus and subject of interest. Very Nicely Done! :o) Helvi

"Face of time," comes to my mind, awesome photo, lots of detailed shown of the faces captured of times past. Would like to have been there to see the many changing shadows and color as the sun faded. This could be a "Rock" in ones hand or a great monument. Thanks for sharing..
