There is only one woodpecker that makes holes this big. The Pileated Woodpecker.
Interesting way to show the hole and wood chips.
We see holes like this all over the Wetlands. After they leave the hole another animal makes it their home..Like a Screech owl.
We saw it yesterday at the Wetlands.
Nice shot Fred. Hope you get a shot of your visiting Carpenter.
:)

course i would be the smartass who would say..stick your hand and see whatcha pull out. wink. you know years ago i was the class comedian..not the class clown. you know the difference? well the class clown would streak thru the classroom butt naked with clothespins on his nipples yelling like a fool. see as the class comedian im the guy who told the class clown that is was a cool idea and why dont he try it..evil grin..lol. the clarity is great the angle of the shot of the hole in the tree is great. the capture of the light is great. the image is balanced and eye interesting to the viewer. good eye and great job overall

I wondered whose this was sg! lol...should have known....

It has got to be a Woodpecker. I have some amazing holes in some of thee trees around my place and often hear the rat-a-tat-tatting of the Woodpecker as they are making one of these holes. Like you I find a pile of little wood chips at the base of the tree. They are diligent little workers aren't they!!

Nice job documenting it's labor here. Particularly enjoy that you made a collage in order to show their effort w/ the pile of wood chips at the bottom. Nice focus....even the bark of the tree is well detailed. Perfectly exposed w/ good color.

Another interesting post from you sg. I will be very disappointed if this is a trick and I am way off but cannot imagine I am.

Deborah

funny hole and funny shot

it as an excellent focus and light handling, but no center of interest and no story telling and this is why I gave you a low rate

thanks for sharing

That's awesome how birds can create holes like that. The photo or collage should I say has a theme of nature and its resourcefulness as demonstrated by the woodpeckers.

It must have been a fairly sizable woodpecker to leave chips of that size. A nice collage that shows the entire story. Great colors and fine composition, especially in the shot of the tree.

You have posted quite an intriguing scene here! Looks man mad to me. Cannot imagine a bird/s could create such a symmetrical and neat hole. The image is sharp and well exposed. Well done!

    many thanks nik;
I'm living here since '43 years and I know all the trees in my garden; this has been done in the last 3 days, no more....and no stranger enetered my garden...
I've seen a bird entering this hole: Susan FMT think it is a woodpecker

Fred,
A beautiful picture of the woodpeckers hole * the tiny wood chips it produced while boring into the tree trunk...with any luck you should find the Wood Pecker nesting in it. beautiful composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.
