You are correct - the background is over done.
I believe that the colors also clash. The butterfly lacks good detail and is a bit too contrasty with no detail ain the dark areas.

Been at it for 50 years and I just now starting to get the hang of it. Only way to learn is by doing.

A good start. Nicely centered. Well cropped. Need to let the camera focus for you. A little over exposed and needs for focus. Thanks for sharing.

Quite a reasonable butterfly shot posted here! Your nice composition captures a good and natural pose. Sharpness is OK, but as you explain the background is too bright. You need to use a photo editing program to reduce this. Otherwise well done!

Cool,Jack!
Your photographic capture of this elegant and colorful Swallowtail Butterfly makes for a really attractive picture to view,my friend!
And I feel that the slightly 'hyper saturated' pink flowers only add to the image's appeal! : )
'Good Show',my friend!

nicely structured shot with the wingspan engaging the whole framework..it is a pity that you have not managed to sharpen the colours as much as you would have liked but the defused backdrop of the pinks help enhance the beauty of this creature

The framing of the butterfly in this composition along with the cropping you did works very well.

As to sharpening - you can't sharpen what isn't sharp already. What happens when you try to sharpen is background colors become so intense they look fake, and the object in question actually gets less sharp.

The position of the insect in this frame says you were behind and at a low angle of focus. In this position Aperture becomes the key element. In shooters parlance you have opened up to much - using a small f number(< f/4?). That gets everything closest to you in fine focus but as you move forward the head, antenna and flowers begin to lose detail.

If your are looking straight down at the insect a low f number will work pretty well, but for this angle you need to 'Stop Down' to perhaps f/18. Shutter speed will be affected by stopping down, so be prepared to make a change there.

I hope this helps. You definitely have a good eye for this type of imaging ... B-)) Bob

I really appreciate your advice but as you can tell I am just a point and shoot camera hound, I really don't know that much about photography but I joined this site to learn and to meet new friends and hope to learn the tool in this trade but I want to be a good photographer and all the advice that I can get will be a big help, thank you very much. JackJr.

Jack, just about everyone on this site started out the same way. We all want to get better at this art and this site can sometimes do exactly that - help.

The best advice I can offer is; one, keep shooting even when you don't feel like it. The more you practice the better you get. Try new approaches to old subjects (Butterflies!). Second, READ - your camera manual. On amazon books look for Jeff Wignalls book "EXPOSURE: Photo workshop". If you only have one book about photography in your library, this should be the one. Easy to read and understand - great way to get to know the language and terminology. Three; have fun! Bob

nice capture of the butterfly, but the background flowers are too bright and the focus is too soft taken from the initial impact

thanks for sharing

I really like all your butterfly photos. The colors are fantastic, the bright pink with some yellow is really pretty. The butterfly is in a great position and it is centered nicely. Terrific job
