Very unusual piece and awesome poem! The perspective in this is great and the angle of the buildings draws you right in. I love the subdued colors and the patterns of the clouds give it a nice energy. Great job!

Hi Raoul!
Well,
I didn't pay a lot of attention to your poem ( poetry just isn't my thing,I guess! ) but I enjoyed your artistic presentation of this big gnarly long legged bird!
: )
'Good Show',my friend!

A great entry for the contest. I would guess from your poem that you are prior service as I too use those terms on occasion. The details of the drawing are well done as is the pose and position of the main subject. Nicely done. Best of the best in the contest ~ Steve

A very well conceived piece of art.

Strong and bold lines accentuate the big birds presence. All the other lesser birds are at attention waiting for him to settle.

There is wonderful drama associated with this piece.

The color mix promotes impact and view ability.

I think you have a very worthy entry for this contest, good luck ... B-)) Bob

I certainly do not need a name here! I am very happy to see a drawing from you of one of my favorite birds that i have studied/observed and photographed for over 12 years now. The Great Heron is in a pose of when they are about to land. They use their wings like a parachute before touch down.
I love the colors and visible eye that should be yellow with black center not white. ;)
I like your poem that goes along well with your drawing as well as the colorful building and additional 3 herons in the background.
Nice work! Good Luck!

YOU should go to the Fan Story side of the house and submit this poem utilizing your own artwork to accompany it. I thoroughly enjoyed the poem....it is really good....and I do mean REALLY good.

Now back to your Art, which I am reviewing...not really your artist's notes which just happens to be an very well written poem....Did I mention that I liked your poem (chuckle chuckle)...

Your art....I am having a little trouble with your main bird here....is is my understanding that there are other bird covering him to protect him ....is that why those feathers are so far up and away from him? Or if not, then I do not quite understand his wing span because the way I see this bird is as if he is featherless and maybe he is just carrying with him a feathered umbrella....now that would be a cute story (I must write that down....writing children's books is another one of my hobbies I dabble in)...please do elaborate how exactly you have this painting because I am very open to art and see things normal folks do not, but this one has me slightly off centered. I would appreciate a reply then I will adjust the rating accordingly.
I must mention that I do like his colors....not very many birds have that color....making it unique.
And the other birds do look like they are standing at attention waiting for your main bird to tell them "at ease".
I also like the uniformity of the colors of the building...red then a shade of blue green...sage perhaps...then red again and then back to the sage...maybe it is more like an aqua.....and your cloud....the top reminds me of an elephant....the bottom it could still be a part of the elephant but then it would be more like a ballerina of elephants and when you are a cloud you can be light as a feather (no pun with the bird word intended); therefore, he could be dancing in the sky...... Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Schatzling,

Thanks for the detailed and astute review as well as the compliments. I do intend to post the poem on Fan Story soon ;) Regarding the pose, it is actually the odd position of the wings that first drew my attention to the photograph from which this has been adapted. I believe the bird is actually caught on the line going across the buildings but to my eye it looked like he was giving a covert instruction to his troops :) Hence the inspiration behind the poem! To add to this, a few days ago I spotted a sea gull behaving oddly above a car park. It was holding its position against a strong wind whilst flapping frantically as it pooed all over the cars beneath it as though it was executing a manouevre like a soldier :) Thanks once again for the review. I appreciate it! R
