I really like this painting. Her expression is very expressive. I loved the description of her and your technique. You had mentioned the old masters to accomplish the illusion that the painting is looking back at you no matter where the viewer stands? Can you suggest any books to read to learn how to do that?? Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your five star vote and your comments. I know of no books. It is a discovery by observations of many different old masters paintings. When I post the final portrait in this collection of four I will describe precisely what I have discovered. With this one I have posted two.
-
Ok I will keep an eye out for your last painting.
-
Chuckle, chuckle. The next post in this collection will be Hestia. The last one will be Aphrodite.
-
Very cool. I'm looking forward to it.
-
Sorry, I did it again. The goddess of the sea is Amphitrite. That is the last painting in this collection.
-
LOL oh okay.

Carl ,
It's over the fence .
It's a home run !
Congratulations .
Gaia the Greek Goddess has a persona , an attitude .
Artists are storytellers . It's a message , story or a simple statement .
You have conveyed this to the viewer . Nicely done !
It's the posture , the angle of the head , the slight roll of the shoulders and of course her facial expressions . They all add up to a very cool piece of art .
Good luck and thank you for sharing .

Thank you for your five star review and your comments, especially knowing that most of the planet is of yellow-brown colors and tones. Living in Israel you would of course know that.

This is a nice portrait. I had never heard of thei goddess before. She difinitely has a personality. She almost looks Native American. Thank you for sharing. Good luck in the contest

Thank you for your four and a half star vote and your comments. But, I am curious. What issues or lack of qualities did you see that made your vote. I would really appreciate it to know so I may improve my painting.
-
I have trouble with the rating system. Five means perfect, 4 means good but not perfect. I thought it was better than good but not perfect. Everyone seems not to want to go by the rating system. I have gotten three and not complained. Some only ever give 4, nothing higher. Maybe, you can explain the rating system to me. I thought it could have been just a bit better with the skin toning and shading.
-
Thank you for replying. I see what you are talking about in regards to the skin tones. It does look a little washed out. As to the rating system, it also does appear that reviewers, in my opinion, overrate, I suspect, because they want to be kind so as to not risk being down voted as a get back. I have seen that done on another site. Just human nature I guess. The other reason that I suspect that is in play is that when a reviewer gives less than a five vote the reviewer needs to give the reason in order to assist the presenting artist. A five vote means that it is a good presentation that does not need any element changed, enhanced or otherwise improved thereby not needing any commentary. A six vote is for the wow, or awe factor about the work. Not only does it not need improvement it just grabs the viewer. Anything less than a five should have some comments about levels of improvement needed that most artist members don't bother with unless prodded. A three vote simply does not meet the viewer's expectation or personal standards of quality acceptance. But, again the viewer doesn't bother with trying to explain or assist the artist with a proper critique. We are participating in a very competitive, subjective and limited field of interest. What we see as style can be seen as an inability to draw or paint, etc. What we see as adroit and skillful representation can be seen as common place. It is really to bad that most artists are, again in my opinion, to fearful to give an accurate and supportive critique. Hopes this helps.

Informative notes!
Fine facial features & smooth textures.
Bold but not obscene.
Erotic but not vulgar.
Nude but not nasty.
Fantabulous skin tone.
Graduated backdrop tone is apt for this lively portraiture.
Thanks for sharing...

A wonderful rendition in portrait form of the Greek goddess of the earth, Gaia, on a "day off" if you like haha, from reading your interesting and informative narrative. Excellent facial features and proportions throughout, and a very lifelike painting that clearly a lot of work and effort have gone into. Remarkable detail of her face and hair, in particular the eyes are striking and draw you in, and her hair is very subtle and brilliantly intricate, with the two grey extensions on either side adding to her modest goddess image. Her expression is one of warmth and trust, and you have drawn her very well with her head turning to the side with her shoulder showing too, giving good proportion to the piece. The colours you have used are brilliant for the background, as you mentioned in your notes very earthly and also they contrast well with her image and accentuate it further. A great piece of art, and best of luck in the competition! :)
