Sometimes luck is with us as it the case of this photo. To catch such a magnificent animal half out of the water is unusual for the casual observer. That is part of what makes life interesting.

Great focus for shooting on the fly. This was a case where everything came to together to produce an outstanding photo. Congratulations.

Yes Nancy. Certainly lucky and taken on the fly. We were in a small rubber boat and I was looking the other way taking shots. Suddenly someone screamed "There's one right here'! I swung around with my finger on the burst button and simply pointed. I actually only caught a quick glimpse of the whale but fortunately the camera caught 7-8 shots in sequence. What a magnificent sight seeing these creatures in all their power and magnificence. Thank you again Nancy ~ Steve

Very nice capture. I would have only got this shot from land, lol. You are a brave person to be able to get such a great shot. Usually I just see them from far on land. It's so cool to see them up close. Good detail. You have brought all your viewers for a ride right next to you. Thank you. Very nice piece.

I'm curious about the second & third shots as it may have shown more interesting body parts!

With a strong visual impact like this, technical factors such as horizontal tilts & eye capture may not be so significant...

Sharply focused.
Fine features & textures.
Overcast illumination.

Monochromatic colors. Excellent details.
Impressive setting.
Dynamic spray creates a great dramatic impact!

Thanks for sharing...

Yes the next shots show more of the body. I did after photo work on them and as such they were not eligible for this contest. Will post the others. Thanks for your review Dick ~ Steve

Well the next few shots have me riding this Big Boy but I didn't want to look like I was bragging. Got pretty lucky here as it all happened so fast. Thanks for stopping by Mark ~ Steve

This is a good action shot! I can't get over how close you were and that you even got to see this at all! So cool. It's face is so unusual and interesting to view. The major splashes of the water indicate the power of this guy really well too.

Steve. Thank you for your detailed artist notes. I think curved horizons happen whenever there are swells in the water. In this photo, though, you are right. It does not meet any of the conditions for which a curved or non straight horizon would occur. Nice composition and capture. Sharp image. A good entry for the contest. Thank you for sharing and best of luck with this image

Startling to be sure and to hear this and see this must have had your heart in palpitations.

There is not a thing wrong with a tilted horizon line. In our photo club we had a Nat. Geo photographer that went to Korea to do a shoot. He came back with purposely tilted photographs that were dynamite.

I therefore am one person who looks forward to tilted horizon lines for they do add to the excitement of the photograph.

Purrrrrfect.

Hmmm. I have never considered the 'Out of the ordinary, unleveled horizon' and other things before. You are so correct. Perhaps it is time to reconsider the 'Traditional' ~ Steve
