Is this the dog of Casablanca? He somewhat reminds of Humphrey Bougart indeed, especially the hat and the piano. The dogs looks a bit lonely and sad. Might be because his beloved lady left. And such is the freckle finger of faith. Well than, play it again Sammy-dog.

I love this pet portrait. The hat on the dog is so private eye Mickey Spillane. I love the bar with the candle lit tables. No one ever suspects the piano man as the private eye so the cheating spouse will definitely be caught when she comes in. Is tha buckle a secret camera?

A brilliant choice for the competition and superbly drawn, with excellent and sharp precision, a fantastic background given the title (well chosen!), with the old style tables scattered about the 1940's nightclub, a simple white tablecloth and matching red candle on each one - the bar in the b/g creating good depth and perspective, as well as adding to the visual stimulus colourwise, and finally "Sam" himself (is that right?! lol), looking dapper in his trilby style blue hat and yellow jacket with red tie to finish off the outfit nicely. The details, shading and tones of brown through to black used in the face of the hound are sublime, a true testament to a dedicated and varied cartoonist, great work :)
