For the first go at it I think you did a fine job portraying happiness. Her eyes and smile say it all.
We all start out the same...the journey is about learning and growing in your work.

Like you, I too have always wished I could draw well (or sing, or dance, or a lot of other things - haha!). You definitely have talent - a lot more than I could hope for, and this piece proves it. Your shading is very good, and you succeeded wonderfully in expressing your joy in the eyes and smile. The hair is also very good. You should be very proud of this!

Your shadowing is well placed giving the portrait dimensionality. I love the flow of the curls in the hair and how it cascades over the unseen yet suggested line of the shoulder. Beautiful portrait on its way to a beautiful composition.
