Love this poppy. Very sharp and stands out from the background. The out-of focus other poppy is very distracting because it is so bright. Ones eye tends to be attracted first by bright light. I would clone this out and do a little more cropping from the right. With those changes a six!

Do appreciate your thoughts Robert but most definitely wanted the second bud in the image. May go play w/ a copy of it though just to see what it looks like as a vertically formatted single blossom....just satisfy my curiosity...lol Thank you for having a look though and offering your honest assessment....as I aid I do appreciate that.

Deborah,
A beautiful picture of this Oriental Red Poppy bursting out of the hairy bud cover into the soft light shining down upon it it's petals like crushes silk slowly opening out. Beautifully framed by the green of it's foliage with a second bud opening in the blurred background . Beautiful composition framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.
Susan

The pool boy has told me many a time about your show stopper . To be totally honest with you , I thought it was the JD talking . The guy loves the drink .
Then I came upon the show stopper .
Everything came to a complete stop . It was slow motion , I didn't notice that the light had turned .
It's a very cool piece and I really enjoyed your notes
Hey , keep on shooting cause your really good at it .

This is a wonderful close up of this poppy just beginning to bloom! The sharpness and detail on the main flower are excellent. I like how the out of focus flower in the background almost mirrors the main flower. Beautiful light and color too.

Wow! Thanks for those notes. I had no idea the blossoms were that large. How wonderful to have them in your garden. This is such a unique image of the blooms pushing out of the pod. They almost look like a silk hanky tucked inside a green tuxedo pocket.

Oh what a perfect description Linda. It DOES look exactly like a silk hanky and I'll tell you I am always amazed at how such a large flower fits into such a small pod. It's so much fun to watch it 'unfold' it's way out. Thank you for the wonderful (and fun) review. Always appreciate YOUR thoughts.

A beautiful shot. I like the way the petal is just breaking out and the second one in the background is a great addition. Beautiful colors and very sharp hairs on the pod.

It is quite amazing to watch that large, lovely blossom unfold it's way out of it's pod MM. I am always surprised how such a large flower fits into such a small pod. Anyway...can you tell I'm dreaming of flowers? lol Do appreciate the very fine review here. Thank you so much.

Ooppsss....that Oriental word!
Why, what's offending in that adjective? We use it casually here: Oriental eyes, dress, costume, battery, island, store, etc!

Well, this one is so Oriental!
It blooms so early inching its way out from that too tight pod!
Nature must provide a larger pod for this gorgeous bloom!

Verdant overtone lends a perfect backdrop for this striking vibrant creation!
Nice addition of that lower bud for visual balancing...
Selective focusing.
Subdued lighting.
Ideal framing.

Nice perspective & narrow DOF.

Thanks for sharing...

Orientalis is part of it's botanical name Dick. Nothing offensive about using it like that. Do appreciate you checking this one out and thank you for the fine review you've given it.

The Poppy is one of my most favorite early flowers to photograph. They are simply a treasure trove of possibilities.

I am particularly fond of shooting them in this stage and earlier.

You have captures an interesting subject. This capture is well framed and all camera technical factors are right on.

Keeping the other partially opened bud in the frame gives balance and scope to this fine take.

May I suggest another approach - Get your flashlight ready and a spritz bottle of water. Venture forth into the night suitably armed with camera, flashlight and spritz bottle. If there is no dew clinging to the spines of the bud spray a little water on it. Then try different angles with the light until the water drops shine and glisten like jewels in the night. Might be fun?

Good to see some blossoms ... OMP

Instead of mud OMP??? lol I have to agree though and am soooo anxiously waiting for the new flower season to actually get underway! I like your idea. Often during my night time forays into the gardens the flowers actually do have dew on them but taking a spray bottle would work for those times there is none. Although, the thought of dragging something else around in the dark and not ending up on my butt somewhere is just a tad intimidating...lol

Anyway, what a treat to find this great review WITH a shiny gold star from you here this morning! Thank you so very much dear OMP. I hope you know how much I appreciate it.
