I know who has taken this photo, because I know you have got yourself a new puppy. He is just adorable the way he is tilting his head looking at you with such kind eyes. The softened and neutral background is perfect for the dog to stand out in an excellent way.
This is also a very sharp photo showing such clear and well defined details in every part of the dog's sweet face, and the exposure is spot on.
The square format you have cropped the photo into works so well, and the puppy is well placed within the frame. Indeed a lovely and well taken photo with an excellent DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.

One of the first things I teach my dogs is to look at me, Chance is just 6 months old and in training ! He?s a handful but so much fun too!
