This looks so interesting. It looks like I could be on another boat looking at this boat. You did a fantastic job.
You succeeded in creating convincing water

Thanks #2, much was said on the earlier reply. This was my first attempt at digitally painting water. It was extremely difficult. Even after many paintings of water...it remains among the most difficult to achieve. Thanks again for the sixth star. Russ Cleversley

A beautiful marine landscape. Your lighting style reminds me something of between Vermeer and Ingres. The change from yellow to blue in the far background is a bit too strict. The gestures of the persons on ground and on the boar are lovely.

Michael, I truly appreciate your thoughtful review. I have been working in the arts, especially with art galleries, for over 40 years but have never heard the phrase "the change from yellow to blue is a bit too strict. It is an intriguing, yet somewhat baffling, pronouncement. My interpretation would be that, perhaps, the transition from one color to the next was too abrupt. Or, that the hues were overly complementary. However, you have provoked some thought and I thank you for the insight and the opportunity to reappraise that painting. Russ Cleversley

This is so beautiful
great composition, color and light
all the elements contribute to making a wonderful scene, with its' hopeful/happy feeling of return
so nice the way the water, the boat, the rocks and the lighthouse were done. I could look at this a lot and still enjoy it.

filly, this painting was done 3 years ago. I was surprised to see a review come in for it. BUT...thanks for the excellent review and rating. I truly appreciate both. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Is the Oakland Occupy Protest anywhere near you? Russ Cleversley

I went to the bottom of the home page and clicked on digital photography, and yours was toward the top of the list. Happy to find it. Yes, the Oakland Occupy is somewhat near me, but not my neighborhood. Happy Thanksgiving to you too. Best, Phyllis

Diamond, this is one of my earlier paintings that took nearly 100 hours to paint. Whew!! Since then I have increased the painting sizes to 8 feet tall or wide but have decreased the time to an average of 60 hours. Many people think I am nuts to spend so much time on a painting...but details take lots of time and I love to add details. Thanks for another review. You reviewed "The Final Salute" yesterday. Thanks again, Russ Cleversley

Love the lighting on this the sun just hitting the front of the lighthouse and peaking through the sails. The clouds and the sun rays really brighten up the dark sky. I really enjoyed the texture of the water and the stone. Do you start with a drawing or a photo? Very nice!

Hi Jan, thanks for the excellent review and rating. I do not start the painting with a drawing and I do not use photos. Instead, I start with a blank canvas and lay down a series of earth colors that become the foundation for a painting. In almost every case, I do not have a specific image in mind. Each painting remains in the "discovery phase" until I am well into it. To me, having the painting in a continuous state of evolution is exciting. I paint each element onto separate layers so the composition stays fluid. There are times when the entire theme of the painting will change as the direction changes. I looked at your digital art. It has a nice visual appeal to it. Doodlefly is fun, has lovely color, nice composition and movement. I did a butterfly painting last year "Butterflies Galore". I love painting digitally. I can achieve higher levels of realism compared to what I could accomplish with oils. Thanks again for the review. Russ Cleversley

jmerrell, Thanks for the review and rating. I took a quick look at your portfolio, looking at just the paintings. I like your style. Your paintings are warm and charming. My favorite is "Serenity". The overall ambiance is soothing and has a softness of color that makes me feel serene. The clouds are beautifully done, the angular foreground provides considerable perspective that draws the viewer through the canvas. The turquoise water compliments the overall earth tone colors. Very nice. Thanks again, Russ Cleversley

Pat, I am proud of my paintings until I finish the next one. I tend to be very critical of my work, often going back to touch them up as my skills improve. "Coming Home" has has several modification sessions but it remains close to what you see here. Thanks again, Russ

the amazing thing is when i look at this i totaly get a sence of texture that you would expect from acrylic or oil. very creative use of digital media. the rays of light and the waves are some of my favorit details from this painting err i mean digital picture. great job.

betzel, thanks for the awesome review. I have been painting with the digital medium for 13 years. My early paintings lacked the "painted look" but as time went on it was possible to more closely simulate traditional art. It pleases me that you noticed. Welcome to FAR...you have recently joined the forum. It is a great place to be if you are willing to truly participate. I see that you are a surrealist. I was never able to change my world into abstract visions as you are able to do. Nice art. Thanks again, Russ

thanks, ya alot of my art work comes from meditative visions, and the worlds of the inner mind. also listening to music and visulizing the transformation of sound (sya like a synth lead) into formations of light and matter. you have really great quality work. i was very supprised to see that it was created in photoshop alone. pretty amazing. have you ever tried 3d type stuff. you might want to check out blender its free and open source. you can find it a www.blender.org i think you could really benefit from creating a scene in a 3d relm that you can actauly move through.

This is a beautiful piece of digital art. I love what you have done with the lighting and coloration. Your sky and the streams of light you have created are wonderful. This is beautifully executed. I love the composition. Thank you for sharing.

This is beautiful

I'd struggle to get a photo this good, and you did this with a mouse? Stunning.

I love the light in the painting, it glows.

Hi Jerrica, thanks for the review. Yes, I paint with the mouse, starting in 1997. It seems very natural to me. Some of my paintings required over 750,000 strokes of the mouse. I see that you are new to FAR, welcome. It is a fun place to be if you truly participate. We have many members from England, my heritage country. Thanks again, Russ www.pixelartisan.com
