    Fantasist: Celia Claase,

Thank you for the beautiful picture borrowed for the contest.

It reminds me of some of the boat people I saw when the ship was moored in Hong Kong during August 1955. I was a boat engineer and we were running up and down Repulse Bay delivering personnel to the Fenwick Street Landing or across to the Star Ferry Terminal.

We passed any number of the floating villages on the waterfront.

One thing I remember among so many, was the bamboo scaffolding supporting the workers constructing housing to contain the numbers of refugees fleeing from the mainland.

Curiously, they were working on the Clark Gable movie "Soldier of Fortune", filmed mostly in Hong Kong. I appreciate seeing the reruns and comparing it to the city, then and now.

We were warned of the smugglers operating at the time. I was on the boat, servicing its engine when a large junk came past the line of ships at anchor. The sails were down and it was running on its auxiliary power plant. However, that engine was no auxiliary from the sound of it, and the speed at which it went past us, at least fifteen knots, and with hardly a bone in its teeth. I would have guessed it could have sped away at twice that speed. Chatting with some of the British soldiers there, they agreed that it was probably a smuggler's craft running up the coast from the mainland.
