webster: 5 photos by the same artist in the top 12. FIVE. Doesn't Tom himself in the thread below say that 3 are allowed?
April 11 at 11:32PM
FanArtReview: Repeatedly complaining about the same thing is not going to change anything. As I replied to your comment earlier: If a member is not aware of the rules and promotes their work we let them know not to do it again. - Tom

So we let the artist know (the artist was not aware of the rules) that only 3 posts should be promoted to the top 12 position in the future.

Badger: Webster and the others in the string below have a good point Tom, you are providing us with a service in return for our money. It is not therefor unreasonable of us to expect that you have some kind of system in place that ensures members can only post three images on the front page at any one time. After all FAR already has an automated system to prevent members from posting more than two images in a day along with a very basic character counter to ensure reviews are long enough and contain real words.

There is an old adage in sales, 'Any dick can can rip a billy off once but it takes real commitment to make them buy a second time'.
    April 12 at 4:59PM
Cephus: Is this rule specified somewhere? I can not find it.
    April 12 at 5:49PM
FanArtReview: To put a system in place to check automatically would be ideal. But it would be very difficult. The reason is the listing isn't static. You may be at the 15th place on Tuesday and the 10th place on Wednesday as promoted work above you on the list expires. Or you can be at the 5th spot one day and the 15th the next as people promote their work above yours. It's very rare for someone to post three+ posts on the featured list (I think it's happened one or two times in the past). And when it does it's easy enough to let the artist know not to do it again. It is a rule in the site terms. - Tom
    April 12 at 7:31PM
Skyangel02: I decided to take another look at the site terms http://www.fanartreview.com/agreement.htm.
I cannot find a rule about promoting work in there any place Tom.
It is also not in the FAQ so maybe you can give us a link and copy and paste the rule here so we can all read it and know where we can direct other people to read it.
Either Cephus and I are blind or we are looking in the wrong places or rules about promotion are not written any place.

    April 13 at 2:31AM
Badger: Cephus and Ms Angel, it is in the last sentence in paragraph 5(A) of the FANARTREVIEW.COM SERVICE AGREEMENT ~ Subscriber shall not post more then three posts in the top 12 of the promoted art or photography list (no limit below the top 12) at the same time.

Tom, in my world difficult is an excuse not a reason. "We choose to go...not because it is easy, but because it is hard, because that goal will serve to measure and organize the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone and one which we intend to win."
    April 13 at 5:51AM
Flight_of_Raven: Wait, the limit only applies to the top 12?? What good does that do? I want to see no more than three works by one single artist on the entire front page at any given time! And only one by any single artist in the top 12 at any given moment should be permitted. Honestly.. three out of 12? That's still pretty dominating, and if there were four really determined members, the featured spots could be dominated by the same four members. That should be absolutely unacceptable.

But what do I care? It's not like I participate in any reviewing or promoting.
    April 13 at 5:58AM
Cephus: Ditto but do not see it happening as it would reduce the site income.
    April 13 at 7:02PM
Skyangel02: Very funny Badger.I am still blind and none the wiser as to where it is actually posted. Obviously no one cares enough to check. They simply take people at their word and believe them without checking the facts.

Here is a copy and paste of paragraph 5(A) of the FANARTREVIEW.COM SERVICE AGREEMENT

    5. Subscriber Conduct.
    (A) Only one person per account. Only work created by the subscriber can be posted. Subscriber shall use FanArtReview for lawful purposes only. Subscriber shall not post or transmit through FanArtReview any material which violates or infringes in any way upon the rights of others, which is unlawful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, vulgar, obscene, profane or otherwise objectionable, which encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability or otherwise violate any law, or which, without FanArtReview's express prior approval, contains advertising or any solicitation with respect to products or services. Any conduct by a Subscriber that in FanArtReview's discretion restricts or inhibits any other Subscriber from using or enjoying FanArtReview will not be permitted. Subscriber shall not use FanArtReview to advertise or perform any commercial solicitation, including, but not limited to, the solicitation of users to become subscribers of other on-line information services competitive with FanArtReview.

Badgers addition is a figment of his own imagination but most entertaining. LOL.

    April 13 at 9:32PM

webster: O.M.G. You have got to be kidding me. I complained earlier about the front page . (Well, I brought what was happening to everyone's attention.) I go out for the evening, and see that many have commented on my profile thought.
BUT, here's the real kicker- THERE ARE STILL 5 PHOTOS BY THE SAME ARTIST PROMOTED TO THE TOP 12!!!!!!! And Tom even commented twice on the other thread!!!!!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? Tom- DO SOMETHING!!!! This is ridiculous. What a joke.
You got your money, Tom. Now do something about it, as there is a limit, correct???
April 11 at 9:55PM
webster: You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that anonymous contest entries are posted by the same artist.
    April 11 at 9:56PM

webster: Even when the site administration is contacted, and the response is "thanks for pointing it out, the site will step in", the site does NOTHING when 1 artist takes over the front page with at least FIVE in the top 12. I don't promote, but for those that do, I would have to say that this practice of letting 1 person take over the front page is extremely unfair. It happens over and over, and administration does nothing. If the administration can keep such a close watch on silly profile postings and slap wrists over some of the remarks made, wouldn't you think they would also be keeping an eye on the front page?
April 11 at 4:03PM
avmurray: I totally agree. I have actually at one point counted 7.
    April 11 at 4:23PM
Michael Whitson: That is a good point. They only let you upload two piece a day. But can not control the front page. I have also sent a couple of emails with questions have have not gotten replies back. Is anyone out there who is in charge???
    April 11 at 4:30PM
helvi2: I've seen at least six postings by one artist that are in the Special Promoted section. It doesn't seem fair to let someone OWN the page! If we can only give out so many sixes and only have two postings a day there should be a limit in the promoted section too.
    April 11 at 4:59PM
donkeyoatey: We had this issue before..I thought the site agreed to a total of two?
    April 11 at 5:26PM
Skyangel02: The site makes money from promotions so they don't care who gives them the money as long as they get it. Some actually pay real money to advertise on the front page.
You need to be rich if you want recognition around here.
It's all a money game. The ones with the most money can buy all the places on page one if they wish.
    April 11 at 5:27PM
donkeyoatey: not according to the site rules..the limit is two!
    April 11 at 5:46PM
Intrepid: A person can not possibly review enough pictures to afford to promote two pictures on the front page every day. Consequently, the member must be spending a lot of her own money to do so. One has to wonder what psychological needs a person must have to spend real money to promote a picture at this site. I have been here for two years and I have never paid any real money to promote a picture. I would not begrudge any member for doing so. In the end, they will be much poorer and regret having spent so much money for something that is illusory.
    April 11 at 5:57PM
Sange: It is ALWAYS about the Almighty Dollar. It will always speak louder! The site has gone down since a blind eye is turned.
I counted 7 one day too. And Intrepid is right, no one can review for that much coin. It is bought and paid for. I have only been on the front page because several here have promoted my work.
I hear the train whistle blowing...by summer it is bye bye far....
Never will understand buying ones way to the top.... sigh...
    April 11 at 7:31PM
FanArtReview: If a member is not aware of the rules and promotes their work we let them know not to do it again. It is okay to promote up to 3 works to a top 12 position. - Tom
    April 11 at 8:11PM
Skyangel02: Is that 3 a day or three in three days?
If members promote three a day and they are all up for three days each, a member can have up to nine posts on page one at once.
    April 11 at 8:36PM
FanArtReview: It's 3 on the front page at once. So you have to be careful. - Tom
    April 11 at 8:44PM
webster: No, Tom, YOU have to be careful and watch what's going on here.

webster: Pretentiousness is when one overstates their value or importance in their environment or social group when doing so is completely unnecessary.
Instead of developing their own skills, they critique the methods that others use.
Pretentious people are not actually important, as important people don't have the time to tell others how important they are.
Insecurities are so ingrained into their psyche that they have a need to validate themselves to everyone.
A pretentious person is being pretentious because deep down inside, they know that they are bland, and incapable of anything useful or original.
This is dedicated to the pretentious NEX 7, a self professed "MASTER", in reference to your comment regarding my "ranking" here, which apparently is very important to you.
And to those members who enjoy participating on this site, bantering with friends, and do not have that "+" next to their name, have no fear. Many "experts" have come and gone here.
So tell us all, MASTER- why are you here? To puff up your own ego? You have, in the short time you have been here, already TRIED to show us all, your importance. (see above regarding importance). Most professionals wouldn't waste their time on a "learning site". After all, haven't you learned everything there is to know?
By the way, there is no optical illusion- your horizon is off.
November 13 at 10:09AM
Sange: Here... here Webster! I was one he reviewed and had Several Experts look at my work. He in a review claimed he was The Master.... of what? I have no clue.
    Well said! Fist Bump!
    November 13 at 10:36AM
Echo7: Nobody here is a Master...nobody. Theres a good few here that are very talented in different fields.

The truth is that Fanartreview is a learning site. The quality on a whole is poor compared to some other sites. Please dont anyone take offence to that comment. I'm not for a second saying all the work here is poor....theres some excellent images & artworks on show.

But the so called "Masters" are basically jumped up little turds that spend their time being the smart arses because they recieve something greater than the coveted 5 star rating.

I share here just like i share on other sites...i would never ever think i'm too good for this site or any other. I dont speak down to people & i always offer help.

But theres some that seriously think their better than others here.

If your better then leave...its simple. Collateral damage really....a few clowns ship out...but the guys/novices whatever will stay & learn their art & skills.

    Cool balance.
    November 13 at 1:03PM
Sange: And that my friends is how one who is amazing at what he creates and shoots here on Far.. instead of Boasting or pulling out Mr. BULLHORN to celebrate himself... He humbles himself and speaks truth! Well said Don! People who need to brag and self gloat.... they are what I call.. MMI....Me, Myself and I... if they are that good, why are they here? WHEN you see that one promotes a shot on the front page from last year.... Hmmmmm what does that say about the rankings and race to the top?? Me... I rather learn from the photographers I respect here and not be concerned so much on the rankings and contests.. try mastering the art of true humbleness..... it goes a long way.
    November 13 at 1:22PM
Sinbackkk: And as an added note- Don picked up a camera approximately 3 years ago. Personally, I am a slow learner. But pretty much everything I have learned has come from him. Peace, bro.
    November 13 at 1:30PM
Echo7: Thankyou very much Sange & d....it was 2 years ago though =D. The only time i used a camera before that was when i would shoot myself nude in a safari park. The latter is a joke btw...before you send someone to arrest me.

Seriously though. The beauty of Fanartreview is that its a platform for people. Everyone needs somewhere to start or to start sharing.

The people who have been here for a while need to help others...not extinguish their confidence before they gain it.

I started on FAR 26 months ago i think. Before that i had never taken a photo seriously, What i thought was a good photo in my eyes turned out not to be.....and so on.

With the help of Dennis(Ducilla) Michael Collier, Vipshehan, Photopca & many others i gained confidence. They always answered my questions & helped when they could...which was alot...i owe these guys a hell of alot. Without that help i wouldnt be typing this.

    So guys....if you think your that good....give something back....help people...teach people...do not deflate...advise.

This site would be a hell of alot better with a more harmonious atmosphere.......

Were all still learning...everyone of us.

    Peace bro

bpzzr: There have been those who do not take critisism in any form, they post and almost DEMAND 5 stars. These are the ones I avoid, I have not been reviewing for awhile as 1, I had a few nasty comments back, and 2 Life was too short.
Now I will get back to reviewing again, however I will not be posting as much, why? well because I have learned on this site. Yes some of my images are fair to middling, one or two are good. But sometimes the reviews you get are just not worth it. I ALWAYS try to tell what I like, what I dont like, what I see, If I can suggest improvement, (seldom just crop). But you would be supprised at some of the replies I have got. One chap once asked me why I had not given A five, when I said" I think the center is out of focus, if it were not for this I would have given a five) I ask you.
I am no Master,I never will be, but there are things you can pass on. and if you have EVER had any good advice that has helped you on this site you should pass it on.
    November 13 at 1:57PM
donkeyoatey: I have had so much good advice and help on here that I could not even begin to thank everyone adequately! I remember when we used to have FUN on these forums, and enjoy each other a lot, I am sorry to see how bad it has become!
    November 13 at 2:48PM

webster: Help! Trying to get photos printed- and all I find is CVS, Walgreens, Sam's Club, or Costco. Sam's does a decent job, but I have to re-size everything, which always distorts the picture- people get taller and skinny (Not a bad thing), but other subjects just look squished. Has anyone else had a problem with this, and how have you solved it? Many thanks!
November 5 at 11:43AM
donkeyoatey: Sounds like you should invest in your own printer..it would make things WAY easier, and you could get exactly what you want..I also think they pay for themselves in a short amount of time. Donkeyoatey
    November 5 at 12:08PM
Cephus: I am also in favor for doing one's own printing.
However, I must add that a good print using pigment inks and good paper is not cheap, it costs me almost $10 for a 13x19 inch print. However, for this I am getting a print that is what I want and know it is top quality.
    November 5 at 11:07PM
webster: Thank you both. I might have to look into my own printer. And $10 for a larger print will be a tough pill to swallow, but it may be the only way I'll be satisfied.
    November 6 at 9:50AM
Cephus: I have a Canon pigment printer and have computed that Canon sells ink for right at $8,000 a gallon. My guess is that it does not cost more than a couple of hundred to procuce. Rather nice markup.
    November 6 at 6:32PM
blairwacha: I use Bay Photo for printing. Everything is done on line and by mail. Also, Mpix.com does really nice work, again on line and by mail. Their printing beats the heck out of the locals and isn't any more expensive. You have to add in shipping, but that's not any more than you'd burn in gas.
    November 13 at 8:55PM
sweetdweems: I use smugmug..I think they do an excellent job.
    December 2 at 10:15PM

webster: I thought there was a limit to the amount of photos allowed in the "Artist Promoted" section on the front page? Surely, 4 at once aren't allowed.

Badger: Deb's, 'Name not shown for this contest entry' is more than one member. Give Sin his brain back please.

Learn the differences between to, too, and two. And there, their, and they're. Oh, I could go on and on, but I won't. You know who you are. (And read up on reviewing guidelines- when you give something 1 or 2 stars, it really should be justified- but apparently you aren't an expert in THAT.)
