Echo7: Hey guys...not been around for a while now...been away & far too busy. Ive been a member here for almost 2.5 years now & I've seen little change....except the amount of very talented photographers & artists that come & go.

Now why do these guys leave? . Because we all know...these members would & have really benefited this site on an enormous scale.

These guys leave because it's become somewhat pointless. The numerous & often disingenuous 5 star ratings have become meaningless to most.

97% of images have 5 star overall scores.

I share on many other sites...each of these other sites has a feature or more in place that constantly encourages members to both post & remain active. The comments are far more genuine...as there isn't this silly you scratch my back & ill scratch your back mentality.

These sites have algorithms in place to reward your image on a far more accurate scale...knowing this encourages you alot more. Encourages you to look very closely at the problems you may have, your image may have & also a better idea of what works & doesn't.

Colours, depths of fields, composition etc are incredibly important...not everyone understands what makes an image stand out from the crowd....a more accurate algorithm displays this....not having 5 stars.

We learn constantly from our mistakes..each & everyone of us makes them...but the most important thing is...learning from them.

With constant 5 stars for everything...how can anyone learn?...yes I agree that encouragement is important....but so is the truth.

Tom...I urge you to get rid of these ratings....allow members to comment & score the image out of 10...blindly. If everyone every image received a minimum of 5 reviews...the image would then display a score. Out of 50. The member wouldn't know who awarded what score. So nobodies scared to be honest.

This site desperately needs some sort of truth based system implemented....otherwise you will constantly lose members.

This is without a doubt in your best interest.
I would have no problem paying a membership fee if I thought I was getting something in return. But still the moment it's seeming quite unjustified.

This site has a great array of talented members...but I fear these guys will slowly drop of the radar...& you may struggle to attract & keep new members.
February 4 at 8:43AM
    naturetown: I agree with you
    February 4 at 9:05AM
dream alone: Yep. All reviewing should be done with blinders on. Yes, the clique mentality is and a** kissing is out of control, and the rating system of 1 through 5 and sometimes 6 is worthless - not the revies, but the rating system. Like you, Echo, I've moved on to other sites and haven't looked back (except to log on here once in a while until my membership expires).
    February 4 at 10:03AM
dream alone: Okay. I'm not awake yet. I meant "reviews" not "revies."
    February 4 at 10:04AM
Intrepid: I agree that all reviews should be done blind. There would be no favortism and no revenge ratings.
    February 4 at 11:12AM
Badger: Don, we've both been here about the same length of time and both bought this subject up many times, as have other members, sometimes eloquently sometimes not. The one constant has been that it falls on deaf ears.

Why would Tom want to change the way FAR works? It is a BUSINESS that is presumably a nice little earner for him. Most of us would like to see significant changes but we must recognise Tom's right to run his business as he sees fit. WE have the right not to renew our memberships but have both done so knowing that change is needed - ergo there must be something right about FAR!
    February 4 at 11:14AM
Sange: So True Don,and Badger. I feel many great talents have left here. I hear the train whistle myself and Know of many others who will be leaving as well. Don has a great Idea that would make FAR a better site. Sigh..But it seems that the money wins everytime. Sigh
    February 4 at 12:51PM
Skyangel02: Annie and I had a discussion a while ago about the five star ratings and we both agreed it would be a great idea to score the images out of ten instead of out of five. However, to get Tom to agree is quite another thing since he appears to be deaf to any suggestions which don't make him more money.

I think we are all brainwashed by general society to believe that a five is just an average score and that is why so many are handed out.
Think about it. In the education systems people get scored out of ten or a hundred. Five or fifty is an average pass mark. People are mostly happy when they pass that half way mark. If they get less they feel like failures.
It would be better to score out of ten because a five out of ten as an average mark is acceptable but a 2.5 out of five seems far to low even if it is still the same average.
Giving people 6 out of ten seems far better than giving them 3 out of five. The six is psychologically not as offensive as the three.

As long as people are paid to comment, they will generally comment most on the works which pay them the most to comment and tell others what they want to hear.

I suggest that people pay real money to advertise if they want to advertise on page one but no one should be paid to comment on any work, not even two cents. Then all comments would be genuine and no one would need to wonder if people are commenting just to get play money to advertise their own work since everyone who advertised would be paying for it with real money. Tom would also get more real money from those who are willing to pay for advertising so their work is in front of customers who wish to buy it.

Those of us who had no need or desire to advertise could continue to post work and enter contests and be challenged to improve by trying to achieve the same quality work as the work we admire on this site. If no one got paid to comment then all contests should also be free to enter and winners would still get the honor of winning the digital ribbons just for fun.

dream alone: I'd like to clarify something I said. Yes, there are some cliques here (like everywhere) but there are some wonderful friendships here, too. Wasn't making a sweeping generalization of friendships on FAR.
    February 4 at 8:54PM
phil1950: Well stated Echo and Badger.
    February 5 at 4:07AM
Badger: Gee, thanks for your two penneth Tom.
    February 5 at 2:13PM
Phyllis Stewart: Changing to a TEN point scale would just mean that everyone would expect, and get, a TEN. Silliness, all of it.

Echo7: HDR: High Dynamic Range....

Now the normal way of producing an HDR image is by layering & tonemapping multiple exposures taken to cover a wider EV (Exposure Value) range. Thus producing an image that has the dynamic range in comparism to what the human eye sees.

Human eye records around 30EV, One camera exposure covers around 4-5EV. Hence the multiple exposures to cover this range.

Now some cameras have AEB(Automatic Exposure Bracketing) Others use tripods & change shutter speeds.

But...if you just like the HDR effect...i will tell you another way.

Open your image in Photoshop or Elements, Duplicate the layer...name that layer HDR1
Desaturate that layer
Invert the selection...found under image/filter Adjustments.....By doing this your bringing the shadow detail out.
Apply a little blur-Gaussian blur works best...around 3-5px.

Now you want to go to your blend modes found within your layers palette. Select the "Overlay" option.

Now you have the option to lower the HDR effect, just lower the opacity in layers palette.

Ive spent hours & days working manually with HDR...not using HDR software & trying to wident he dynamic range of a single image without the layering & tonemapping.

Its all about local, micro & tonal contrast. This is the best way so far.

If you need any help with this...please just ask.

January 12 at 3:45PM
MGTF Blue: You lost me at "invert the selection" as you hadn't asked us to select anything.
    January 12 at 5:10PM
Echo7: When you work on a layer....you have selected that layer. So if you have 3 layers in your palette.....theres always one selected. Yeh?. Got it?.

You really do try your hardest to be smart...but everytime you end up looking like an utter clown.

Good try though. Better luck next time.

Heres an idea Blue....rather than trying to constantly start arguments here...get your camera. Open your door & go have fun.

    January 12 at 5:26PM
MGTF Blue: I am not trying to be "smart", you can't 'invert' a layer as far as I am aware.
    January 12 at 5:47PM
Badger: YOU might not be able to but my very old 1999 version of Photoshop 5 lets me invert a layer.
    January 12 at 6:14PM
MGTF Blue: I am using PS 7 but what am I "inverting" it to?
I was asked to convert the image to B&W (desaturate) and then "invert" ???
    January 12 at 6:22PM
phil1950: Iverting a layer makes the colours become opposites eg black becomes white.
    January 12 at 6:49PM
Echo7: I even told you how to do it Blue. Image/filter adjustments. Of course you can invert a layer.

Thankyou Phil. Yeh just turning an image inside out with greyscale. Hence â??bringing the shadow detailâ??. Best way to do it is by inverting it. Then changing the blending mode change brings it back...but with much more dynamic range.
    January 12 at 7:17PM
phil1950: Thank you for posting this method Echo. I have tried to produce HDR with multiple layer and tone mapping with levels, curves, variations but I am not skillful enough.
    January 12 at 7:47PM
Echo7: Your very welcome Phil. I'm working on another method just now. I will post it as soon as im happy with it.
    January 12 at 7:49PM
phil1950: Cool looking forward to it.
    January 12 at 8:12PM
Skyangel02: Don, thank you very much for the tips. I will definitely try this and see what happens.

I think it would be really great if you copied and pasted this lesson into the photography or art forum since the profile forum information gets lost too fast.

Blue, I think Don is saying to change the image on that layer it into a negative image.
There seems to be a problem with interpretation here. ;-O
    Invert means make it negative.

Am I interpreting that correctly Don?

In paint shop pro when we select something we actually use a selection tool which creates marching ants around the selection and whatever is inside the marching ants boundary has been selected. To invert that selection means the outside ends up being selected instead of the inside. I think that is what confused Blue. He was not arguing. He was sincerely confused if I have read this correctly.

I suggest you explain it by telling people to change the BW layer to a negative image if that is what you mean. If it's not then I too will be confused. LOL ;-)

Love you guys. Play nice. ;-)
    January 12 at 8:34PM
Badger: In Photoshop what you are calling 'invert' of a selection is called 'inverse' (CTRL + shift + i or Select > Inverse).

If you have made a selection the 'invert' (make a negative) command (image > adjust > invert or CTRL +I or invert from the half black circle on the layers palate) will change only the selection you have made to a negative but you can apply the invert command using any of the three described methods to a whole layer by not having a selection.
    January 12 at 9:00PM
Life is but a dream.: I just tried your technique and it works gangbusters. You can then go into Ctl + U and adjust colour saturation of each colour as you wish. Ctl + L ...to finish it off. Thanks.
    January 13 at 3:21AM
phil1950: Or you can go into Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.
    January 13 at 3:58AM
MGTF Blue: Thank you Skyangel02, the voice of reason as per.
I did not know about the 'invert' option and was thinking of the 'inverse' of a seletion.
I think the problem I had with the method described by Echo7 was that he said "image/filter Adjustments" and it isn't it is in 'image' then 'adjustments' (filters don't come into it)
I do find it dissapointing that at the bottom of Echo7's method he says "If you need any help with this...please just ask." and when I do he bite my head off and tries to make me look like a fool.
Good luck with getting others to ask questions - doh.
    January 13 at 6:48AM
Echo7: I use Photoshop cs6. I put instructions for elements aswell. Don't accuse me of making you look like a fool Blue....you do that all by yourself. I was helping people by sharing a technique & you just couldn't help yourself. Don't try acting ignorant now.....
    January 13 at 8:29AM
Anonymous One: Watch that attitude/humor Scotland. Some Brits have too much of one and none of the other. You could be the next one muted. Period.
    January 13 at 12:12PM
Skyangel02: Do you boys need a few water pistols to shoot each other? ;-)
    January 14 at 11:00PM
yourbren: Don is kind and generous enough to post instructions to help others. I am dismayed that Blue could be so ungrateful. Blue didn't just ask a question, he found it necessary to imply that that the instructions were unclear and/or incorrect. That is, to my mind, a very poor response to someone who has proved himself generous with both his time and talent.
