Chickadee is a licensed diesel mechanic by trade. My hobbies include wildlife painting, wildlife photography and gardening. I have 2 boys ages 20 and 18. Hubby takes me all over the world to get the wildlife pics I need to pursue my wildlife painting! Have been serious about photography for about 4 years.

I'm not referring to constructive feedback which should always include some positives. And I understand that sometimes someone my wish to give a constructive feedback but perhaps don't word it in quite the way they intended. Everyone's opinion is subjective and different people like different things. I'm talking about blatantly rude and offensive comments. I did see the comment posted in the Traditional Artwork of the Month Contest which said "worst list ever". Totally unwarranted. My slant on this is: if someone doesn't like a post or doesn't understand the technique used, they should not review it. I once received a review of a photo which stated "Cute cat but I see nothing about this photo that warrants attention on this site". That's not constructive. It's offensive. True artists will support each other. There are many different levels of expertise on this site. A beginner loves what they do as much as an experienced artist. All should be treated with respect.

I have been here almost a year and have been harassed and bullied behind the scenes as well as publicly here in reviews. Some of the bullies are now gone from here, but some are still here. People just get angry over rankings and "popularity". All these breed contempt.

chickadee : Thank you Taylor and Sange for your support as always! As for Skyangel, not sure if I agree with the cruel and uncalled for comment as being forgiven or acceptable. We as people are raised from young to respect and love one another. To accept cruel and hateful comments that intentionally hurt others is not only spiteful but unacceptable here and in this world. This is clearly an adult who has no respect for others feelings and though I always have it in my heart to forgive this sort of behavior the intentional and the guilty one certainly knows who they are and just prey on the weak of heart with no intent to ask for forgiveness! This just breeds contempt and hatred on the site and all over the world. If people cannot be accountable for their actions or words where do we as a society stand. Murders, rapists, molesters of children would be running rampid because we need to forgive their cruel actions??? That is where our judicial system comes into play and forgiveness comes when they redeem themselves as humans. Accountability is the main concept here and we as a site should all stick together and eliminate the hateful beings and not accept them until they redeem themselves. Everyone has opinions but how and where they are used is where it counts. I have seen much cruelty on this site and for the most part most have redeemed themselves and have been forgiven. This comment and others of such nature are spiteful and sinister and not accepted by anyone. To accept this just makes the guilty one feel like they have done no wrong. Much like children, if they are not disciplined when they cause pain or hurt they will repeat their actions thinking this is acceptable.

chickadee : Ok Skyangel, so I do respect the fact that someone has something disrespectful or hurtful to say, but truly I don't believe they said it not knowingly. There is a fine line about speaking out of line or saying something when you are angry, but to be so blantant about it does not in any sense of the word make me question if it indeed was a mistake on their part. I think it was a deliberate hit and has been done in the past the same hurtful and spiteful way. If you can accept this as an error where the person did not realize they were hurting many people, well your choice. As for the others you have mentioned I do think people have the right to stand up for themselves and not everyone here will get along. Muting someone for their hurtful comments, okay, but not coming forward and saying who the person is to me is a coward and really, are like a annoying bug. I do believe in forgive and forget but when the attack was on all the artist, hmmmmm!!??? As for the site and the members, yes there will be arguments and misunderstandings but for the most part are sorted out. These people come forward and say their piece or comments whether they were warranted or not and do it in a respectful manner. The problem here is one person, or possibly people are attacking without a name. That to me does not warrant a mistake and do with everything in me think it is deliberate! I have never muted a member and truly have never had a dealing where I have not been okay with the end results. People argue and disagree and there I have no reason not to forgive and forget.

Therefore they hide behind anonymity in order to be truthful and say what they really think. For all we know it might be a member who says one thing openly and is the sweetest person you can think of and says the opposite behind the safety of the anonymous comments in contests. I personally think it would be far better if the contest comments had authors names on them the same as any other comments we make on peoples work.

I understand some of what you are saying Skyangel and I accept that this is your opinion, which you are totally entitled to have. A lot of what you say is valid. I do have difficulty with one thing, though. If we apply your logic to all situations in life, which I assume you do, then anything horrid done by a person can be justified by saying that it's up to the recipient as to how they will react. We know that all people are different, so will react in many assortment of ways and that fits with what you are saying. We are, indeed, responsible for our own reactions. However, each and every one of us is also able to make a choice as to how we behave. Regardless of our circumstances, we still choose our own actions. I know this is getting off the FAR site issues, but a man who beats his wife may argue that he has no control. But he will most likely limit his beating to places that no-one can see. That, to me, is a form of control. Someone acting in a distasteful way and justifying it by saying that the same was done to them as a child is correct in saying that this is a reason, but that reason cannot be used to excuse their behaviour. Their bad behaviour is still wrong and they must own that. Yes, on the occasions where a person has a chemical imbalance in their brain, ie. a diagnosed mental illness, that person will at times behave in a manner where they may not have full control. We can understand that this person does lose control, but the behaviour can still be hurtful and the recipient is entitled to feel hurt. So, getting back to FAR issues, a person who attacks another artist unfairly (I'm referring here to something blatantly rude, not an attempt at constructive criticism) has still made that choice to do so. We can take into account the reasons that they may have done so, but it does not make what they have done right. People have the right to be offended if the comment is clearly intended to offend. I would never tell another artist that their work was crap. If I don't like it I may, instead, say that it's just not to my taste or abstracts are just not my cup of tea. This does not mean that the piece is bad, because my opinion is subjective and what does not appeal to one may well appeal to another. Also, the artist is still trying their best and they deserve encouragement rather than discouragement. If it was a piece of art that I thought I could offer suggestions for improvement, I would do so but I would ensure that I have also pointed out all of the positives as well. This is not an attempt to be falsely nice but, rather, my way of treating the artist with respect. This feedback may still offend and this is where your comments have validity, as in that scenario it is also the responsibility of the recipient to decide if they will take the feedback on board or choose to ignore it and take offense. This can be a really controversial issue and people will have many different points of view. The great thing about people is that they are willing to share their opinions and others will hear them, even if they do not agree.

I am getting totally put off by the this site. I write long narratives with all my images or painting and seems most do not bother to read them! Most of the time I receive critique comments about just what is explained in great detail about the image or painting and still find some members finding this as a fault where it is a natural thing that has occurred in the image not to mention again explained in great detail.Also finding new members raving about my and other members images and painting with no critique and receiving a low ranking. Always thought this was pretty clear in the rules which obviously they have not read! Again I know many of you have come across this problem as well and in fact find it rather irritating to say the least. Even asking why the low ranking gets no response. Lastly I will not be on the site as often as I would like to be and feel the site is not nearly of the quality it was when I joined a short 8 months ago! Wish all my friends nothing but the best in the meantime!
Keri Harrish : The reviewing system can be so frustrating can't it? I'm in a debate as to whether or not I will continue my subscription here. Sometimes I feel like I just can't win lol! Maybe you just need to take a breather?

So much to do and just finding the time to spend on the site is driving me crazy and working midnights is not helping in the least. Maybe I am feeling somewhat guilty about not keeping up with the reviewing as well. You may be right about the time out and taking a break! Just sooo too many great people on this site doesn't help matters either! Sigh!

bpzzr : frustrating isnt it? There are times when an experimental photo, ie one where yo are trying a new technique, only gets comments like. Wonderfull, or I enjoyed this picture, or some other comment that is nice, but does not help. I do not mind a low mark, IF IT has comments to help. I do few ratings, only on pictures I can judge or help or suggest on. OK so this means I do not hepl people get the rosette, but they do get comments, info, or critique (helpfull). Wish a few more people would do this. And yes I have had to develop a thick skin as some people do not want any advice or critisism. Makes me wonder why they join.

chickadee : Gee glad I am not the only one seeing the problem here! From what I see the rules have not changed but feeling the lack of respect for explanations for the low ratings is driving me crazy. Just wish everyone would comply with the rules and judge images and art by what they read or lack of. We are all human and improving our skills as photographers or artists need critique from another point of view and the low ratings are not the solution and certainly not the way we learn or excel!I always thought this was a photography and art site with members judging you for your skills???? I do believe I truly need a time out to figure out what I am going to do with this site. Seems to be a HUGE money grab and the more dollars you rack up the more you submit and work you way up the ranks! Quantity not quality is taking over unfortunately! Pretty sad but things are quite pathetic when you need to put your photo on the art side which I think should be monitored by the site! Pretty straight forward when you submit! Art or photo??!!! Seems to be a frenzy going on and have seen and read some reviews done in very poor taste! I think we should all step up to the plate and bring this site back to where it once was, a joy to be a part of with many wonderful people taking part!We are all friends here lets play nice and by the rules!

table : yes i did notice and it is a shame i use to enjoy it more last year it happens to me ,i do try to give the best i could for what i present and i would want that others see my work and revew and tell me where i am, and if im doing well because that is onest like u and others, but than u find others that u always send them the revews and never receive from them not much may be very few and that is not good we have to remember that we are learning from each other like photos i realy like to revew becaus i eppriciate more the nature of god and learn more from the stories u write that are very interesting too, well hope things get better so we will be glad and know where we are, table.

marieann green : Chickadee, I understand your frustration. At one time, I let it make me frustrated and crazy and now I just ignore it....or try to. I suggest to the reviewer (who praises and gives a 4) that they read the Guidlines for Reviewing. No response. Then there is the pompous ass, who is usually new to the site, who is quite sure that he knows it all and is rude as all get out. They are my favorites! Then there are that Chickadees, Willies, Cannon Shooters and all the lovely people who have become a part of my daily life.

Cecilia Putter : My problem is that many of us, joined to sell our works as well as the comments, but I do not see a way that that will happen. I also feel like I am wasting my time here and have to spend too much time, to "earn" points to post and keep it posted. I found that many people use the exact same words every time they comment, because they just comment to get the points to be able to post again and that is why it happens that they will comment as if they did not read your notes.

Seems there are other sites and though the grass is not always greener on the other side have rules that are not followed here. I have noticed a huge difference here in the past few months and sadly not good to say the least. Quite of bit of nasty comments flying around as well. Hmmmmm?

Wrights Wow Pictures : I have been away taking care of family business. Could not have said it better myself. I have greatly reduced the amount of time I spend on site mostly because of the C*&^ that is passed off as photography when my 5 year old grand son would have taken better snapshots. The other thing is that unless you pay hard cash to get the job done for your reviews, you have to write at least 60+ reviews to get your work recognized.

logcat : Hey Girl, I know the feelings, I havent been on much posting as my hard drive crashed and I lost all my pictures, but the last few I did post the comments were the same way, people should give commentary along with scores. Its hard to make improvements or corrections when you dont know what they thought was wrong. As for a site on Facebook, altho a good idea the picture are not copyright protected. I am heading back to Alberta, and would love to stop in or near your town in July when we go, private message me if this is agreeable with you.

Lacking something, maybe the fun and friendly end of things. So many members leaving and truly miss the correspondence and friendship we all shared. I think the site is indeed in a state of decline and really not sure how to bring it back to the level it use to be at.

(not all fit in this catagory) I am not a great photographer by far but believe I do have a good eye. I try to explain, as per the TERMS OF AGREEMENT which takes time. After all that to get absolutly trashed for my efforts just were giving me to mush greif to continue here. It wasnt the points it was the explinations to justify. Couldn`t agree more

Seems quite a few of the members just don't understand the meaning of giving a good productive review to help improve the photographers image or just a nice review of how they feel about the image would be nice to see as well. While the majority give wonderful reviews the few that don't really have put a thorn in my side in general! Maybe reading the TERMS OF AGREEMENT would help but feel this is not the case and as you said the mighty dollar steps into the picture far too often for my liking and many others as well! Pity and sad for the site! I believe this is a learning curve for all of us and sad to say some can't play the game according to the rules.

cen12964 : I agree with you chickadee, I have been spending less time on the site and not posting as many photos as I did when I first joined last June. Miss seeing your wonderful photos and some of the others that have just disappeared. I too am quite put off about the low ratings with no explainations. I too joined to learn and low ratings do no good if a reason is not listed. I think the site should require all listings 4&1/2 or lower should require a reason and if one is not given you should be able to report the reviewer to the site with them following up to make sure a good reason is given. I have also received some low ratings on some of my photos just because the person reviewing the photo did not like the subject matter, had nothing to do with how good the photo was. I am still hanging in there for the time being but I am not sure if I will renew my membership when it comes due. I have missed your reviews though. I alway liked to hear what you had to say about my photos. I respect your work. Just seeing your photos has helped me be a better photographer, and you have made comments that have been very helpful. Oh well, only time will tell if the site is just going through a phase. If it will come back or just die due to many of the really good members leaving. Seems like it doesn't take many bad apples to spoil the whole bunch.

Maddening to see the low rankings with no explanation to follow. even asking the member for a answer seems not to get you anywhere. I was thrilled to find this site and the many wonderful people here just made this site a joy to be a part of. Will still post from time to time but right now just talking to members who are put off and are doing the same as we are, not posting. So many are gone and really makes the whole idea behind the site lacking somehow. The fun behind posting is just not there anymore. Miss you as well and your images are truly a joy to see. Your unique chickens have taught me about the many amazing breeds of these beautiful birds.

I came to your portfolio to to check what you are doing and found this ongoing diatribe;most of which I agree with. Walking away wont change the system though, there will be plenty of JDs willing to buy their way up the rankings in the delusion that the higher they get the better they are. Personaly I dont bother about how high I get I am here to present my work to a larger audiance than I can get on the local club circuit. So I urge you to come back with your awsome pictures and allow me once again to pull them apart for not bothering to clone out the odd twig.I miss you and the other fans who have inspired me. Mitch

darjenka : Hello my friend, was wandering what happened to you and your beautiful art work..now I know..I 100 % agree with you about how so many people here work..so many times,i found my self in disbelief, after writing my notes in emotion and detail to make people understand my work and the direction, just to be ignorantly put down for something that was explained thoroughly ..very very frustrating..the rating system is ok, but so many people don't even bother to try to follow it, for what ever reason..I have given up on this site many months ago..gave it another chance, because of the wonderful creative people I got to know here, one of which is you...more then a few times I swore I would stop ..seeing the fine creative artists leave, has re enforced my original feelings, I too will leave very soon..Another thing, my art work hardly ever gets put into the traditional art work of the month, and I have worked very hard on my paintings, I know they are worthy..this really bothers me, not to even be put into the draw..I WISH YOU THE BEST THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER! take care, and keep creating your wonderful, creative art

A shame and so sad to see us all split up because of the ignorance of others on the site now. Really put off by the ones that run the site and lack of answers when asking a question. Truly not the way to run the site! As far as your art work not being selected on the artist of the month contest, well truly a loss and shame for the ones who pick the work. I love your art and find it to be refreshing and unique to say the least!Seems the site does not play by their own rules and now not surprised that the new members play by the site's ignorance as well. EvaB : I was wondering where you have been and know of another of my favorite reviewers who is on the verge of leaving. I agree with your observation, and when I first joined I actually complained to FAR that I felt the rules weren't being observed, but on the opposite end. I purposefully posted work that needed help in hopes of getting honest, helpful feedback. And I did from many, but way too many gushing 5s with nothing of substance. I do hope the site improves as I've been missing many of you. It was disappointing that I suggested that my sisters join the site relatively recently, and neither were at all impressed.

darniforgot : Chickadee. I've wondered why your posts slowed way down and I wasn't seeing much of your work. I admire your work and always look forward to the next image you post. Now I understand why you haven't been posting much. I still visit the site often, but have really slowed down on my posts and reviews as well. Mostly due to the reasons already listed above. I have noticed that some of the low rankers are using this to their advantage to drop our images off the front page and to allow theirs to move into the top images of the day. I also do not receive feedback as to why they gave me good feedback and a low rangking, just to notice their images on the leader boards. What a shame people will stoop to that level to get their images moved up and drop some really good images off the main page. I wish that type of activity could be monitored and stopped so those of us who use the site for feedback and learning opportunities could get that back. I've been posting my images at antoher site recently and have actually started making sales (something I've never pursued before). M

I was going to mention that seeing your work has inspired me to use my photography to create my own unique digital images rather than just pursuing photography. I am also using this other site to promote my work and sell it which is something I've wanted to do for many years but didn't feel I could ever pursue a career in this field. You wonderful comments have encouraged me to move forward with that dream. I made my first big sale a couple weeks ago. I really enjoy your work and enjoy reading your logs about the images. I really hope to see you stay, but I also understand your frustrations with the site now days. I have the same frustrations which have really slowed down my posts to the site. Wrights Wow Pictures : If you think the site has not gone down hill look at the number of postings and the number of reviews written. Used to be that in a day you would see 400-600 postings. Now they are lucky if the break 150. I do miss your posts. I have cut way back on the ones I am doing. I am using this site to promote other sites.

6ukcats : chickadee, I don't remember when I was on this site before today, but I admired and loved everything you did. I enjoyed our little chit chat's back and forth about our love of photography and birds. I was always in awe of your creativity and talent. I appreciate the sweet comments you have said about my pictures too. As a "Newbie" I would like to add some comments from that perspective. I signed on looking for constructive comments that would help me better my photography. I really, really wanted to get better and I thought that was what I was getting. I did get some great pointers from a couple people, granted I didn't add too many pictures. In order to "promote" your own pictures/art you have to "critique" other works. But! 1. they all looked great to me 2. what was I doing putting my stuff on here compared to other works I saw 3. what am I supposed to do to "critique" the works on this site??? I didn't know what I was doing, that's why I signed up to start with so I could learn!! It's time consuming, I couldn't offer anything that really helped people with the art I saw. Everyday became harder and harder for me to come to the site until I finally stopped. I couldn't get any real help and I felt ridiculous trying to critique someone's work--like yours!!! I loved and still love to see it, but this site was a disappointment and failure for me. As with so many of the comments I have read here I don't see the point, I didn't sign on for a popularity contest. I miss seeing some of the incredible pictures/art but I won't be back to this site. You do fantastic work, just keep the creativity and talent flowing! Thanks for your friendship while I was here!
