Flight_of_Raven : Ditto. I had friends running in that marathon but to the best of my knowledge they're all fine... I don't understand what's happening to the world.
April 15 at 5:42PM
Sinbackkk : Have friends running as well Kev. This shit is not going end, unbelievable, tried to call some people, can't get through, all cell service is off. I hope some "concerned" citizens find the M$%@&r F%&$ers before the Feds do. Thanks Kelli.
April 15 at 6:23PM
webster : Thanks Kelli. very sad and very scary. Still trying to get through to our friends :(

I am reposting this again because I believe it's an important topic...hoping someone will listen!!!
Think it's awesome that this site is featuring an Artist of the Year - Congrats Olga - Life is But a Dream! Now since it's been raised twice now - once by me last year and once by Echo - how about the Photo of the Year in each of the categories?? From all of the monthly winners??? I was told last year it would be put on the wish list...
January 5 at 7:48PM
Anonymous One : Sweet! Great idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 5 at 7:57PM
MGTF Blue : As I said before it is a great idea and should be a 'given' that each category is voted for by us the members.
January 5 at 8:26PM
Skyangel02 : As I said in Echos profile page last year. I think if we want it done we will have to do it ourselves and not wait for Tom to grant our wishes. I posted a suggestion about it on the general forum but so far only two have commented on it.

MGTF Blue : I will have to congratulate Life is But a Dream here as I can't comment on her own page as she has muted me for deducting stars off of my ratings of her work due to my own personal preferances (seems a bit daft to me, how can I award top marks for work that I think could be improved?)
Yes Killi I agree about the "image of the year" award in ALL catetories, seems strange NOT to do so.
January 5 at 9:56AM
Echo7 : Yeh Kelli, i definatly agree. The contests would be fantastic & more encouaraging for many members to submit over the year.
MGTF...I dont think Olga(Life is But a Dream) or anyone else for that matter is interested in your little dialogue about what you think is daft or not.
Shes just won an accolade here...yet you see fit to bring this up in front of everyone. You love to highlight the fact you get muted often. Some sad statement. People mute you for a reason....but you make out its because they cant handle your divine knowledge.
IS it really everyone else thats daft?....or maybe its the way your doing things?
January 5 at 10:40AM
MGTF Blue : Like I said I couldn't congratulate Olga on her page and explained why.
I will not change my way of rating images as I think it is the ONLY way one can do it.
We are humans not computer and so personal opinions will ALWAYS affect our response to an image wheather people want to admit it or not.
January 5 at 10:48AM
Echo7 : So why not just congratulate her then?....Rather than letting everyone know why?.
January 5 at 10:50AM
MGTF Blue : Wouldn't it look odd it I congratulated her here and didn't explain why I hadn't done it on her own page?
January 5 at 11:00AM
MGTF Blue : I tend to think that your comment says more about YOU than it does me Sinbackkk. The comment has been reported to FAR.
January 5 at 11:42AM
Kelli Lauck : Alright enough....it would have been fine to congratulate without the explanation. This is not the point of my post though. Please get back on topic or refrain from commenting.
January 5 at 11:55AM
Badger : Wasn't Tom also going to speak to committee members with a view to making an award to the most improved artists in their chosen field to reflect that FAR is a learning site?

thank you all for the kind words on my previous post of not renewing...i still have a little while left so i will continue to post on occasion but business is doing really well and my time is devoted to it...the rankings here are just not realistic or truthful in my opinion and it's just not a good value of my time at the moment. I love the friendships I have made --that's the best I can take away from here. I certainly wish you all well...
December 22 at 12:27AM
Skyangel02 : It's great to hear that your business is doing so well. I agree that rankings here are meaningless and totally understand why you feel it is a waste of time posting anything on this site when your time could be spent more productively elsewhere.
Quality work like yours will always be in demand.
I wish you all the best in all you do.

blairwacha : ditto, Skyangel, and you Kelli!
Rankings are a big joke on FAR. The mixed media ranks came out pretty realistically, but in the photography category, noe of the top 3 even have a 5+ rating as an average score by members. I do still enjoy posting and reviewing here, when time permits. Congratulations on a great business!

Kelli Lauck :
Last night and today I have had a great conversation with another member here regarding reviews vs. views. We were both thinking along the same lines as to if members here get a lot of views on their photos, but not a lot of reviews if they are not promoted. I rarely promote my own work, I have been fortunate to have a couple different members be gracious enough to promote some of my work (thank you!!). But I do find that when I don't promote, I may get a lot of views on my photos (most likely from fan email notification) but only a couple of reviews. I do have a couple of people who always review no matter whether promoted or not - to you I say thank you!
I understand that we do not always have time to review works because LIFE happens - I know that is my case. But I do at least take the time to look. Most of the time I don't review simply because time doesn't permit. But, I do try at least once a week to review what I can. I feel that I have always been an honest reviewer and try to offer help when and if I can. But I also have no problem telling someone that they have done something really good.
My personal observation is that there are many who consider a review that indicates everything good about a photo with no help offered a wasted review. I also believe that this mindset has turned some away from offering reviews of this kind. If this is the case, isn't that a shame?? I think it is! Some may feel that they can offer no assistance or feel intimidated (in a good way) that they can't offer anything to make a piece better, so they keep silent. What's wrong with telling someone they have done exceptional work? I don't consider it ego fluffing. Consider this though, if you say nothing because you feel like you can't offer anything but good to say, and you keep silent - how is that person supposed to know whether they did good OR bad??? I am often left with the impression of my own work of "geesh, is it really so bad that I can only get two reviews?"
I don't consider myself to be good or bad, I just love what I do and I do strive to put forth my best effort on ALL of my work, no matter what. Most of what you see in my portfolio is customer work, so feedback for me IS important - the bad AND the good.
There are some real gems out there that never get seen because they are not promoted. I am going to make a better effort to find those works and review them as much as my time permits. I won't pay my own money, and member $'s don't mean much to me because, like I said, I rarely promote my own work.
Curious to see the feedback on this from other members and if you view a photo and don't review it - WHY? (Besides the obvious "I don't like it" or "It was so bad I couldn't leave a low marked review"..) Hopefully this all makes some sense.
November 20 at 9:42PM
blairwacha : I tend to be just the opposite, actually. I find it easier to review good shots. Sometimes very minor changes suggested are the ones the artist may not have noticed. Although most everyone says the take negative reviews kindly, I don't think it's true. I soon learn who takes negative reviews kindly and am happy to help. Those who just get mad can have someone else review their work.
Personally, I don't post much, but when I do, I try to promote most work at least a little so it's worth more than 1 lousy point and 2 cents to whoever is kind enough to review. A person's time is valuable and I'm fine with somone passing over my stuff because it doesn't pay enough. It is such a wonderful thing when someone gives you the honor of a 2 cant review though! Thanks to all who have.
November 21 at 8:12AM
Keri Harrish : Sometimes I don't review the way I should as I simply look at others work without commenting even though I may think it's very well done. I have felt that if I come across someone's work that I think is at such a high level, what can I possibly offer? I had never considered this to be an issue so point taken Kelli. I have had the same feeling as you with having more lookers than reviewers. Often I'm left thinking "Ok, that post sucked." Either way, I appreciate all the reviews I get, which isn't always many unless I or another (thank you) promotes my post.
November 21 at 3:07PM
Skyangel02 : I think the whole problem is that no person has enough time to comment on everything they like every day.
The advertising game around here forces members to promote if they want comments. It is not hard to see that comments are brought by promoting work.
I have noticed that many of the best artists and photographers rarely promote their own work possibly due to not having enough time to comment or reply to comments. The best are usually too busy making real money from their work and helping those who really need their help.
I think we all have a few people who always review no matter whether our work is promoted or not. I think we all greatly appreciate those people but just as each of us cannot possibly even see all the work which is posted in the site daily let alone comment on it, we cannot expect others to comment on all of ours. I might look at a couple hundred pictures or more in a day and maybe will comment on twenty or thirty of them if I have enough time to spend writing. If not, I pass by without a word sometimes because I think there is no point in telling a photographer or artist what other reviewers have already told them. I often read other peoples reviews and think what on earth is the point of telling a great artist or photographer that their work is well focused and well composed, has lovely bright colors and is technically excellent? They already know all that.
I am one of the people who considers a review that indicates everything good about a photo with no help offered a wasted review. I think it is better to find a work where we be helpful and use the comments to help and teach someone who really wants to improve. However, in saying that, I also still comment on work I really like even though I realize my own comments look just as superficial and ego stroking as the ones I condemn. That obviously makes me look very hypocritical in many peoples eyes and I understand why.
Not being able to help others improve their work can be just as frustrating as not being able to improve ones own work. There is nothing wrong with telling someone they have done exceptional work and I often tell people I absolutely love their work when I do sincerely admire it. However,I still see it as ego fluffing. To me ego fluffing is the same thing as encouraging a person and boosting their self esteem. Personally I do not think professional photographers and artists need a lot of esteem boosting simply because those people are already self confident in their own abilities and know they do great work. When a work on the front page already has over 25 reviews and the artist has been told 25 times the work is excellent, how much more confidence boosting do they need? I usually don't bother reviewing it at all unless it is something I think deserves six stars. Then I will comment and give them my highest rating.
If I say nothing because I feel like you can't offer anything but good to say, the artist will already know they have done a great job because 25 other people already told them so. Having one more tell them so is not going to increase their confidence in their own work. Artists and photographers already know instinctively inside themselves if their work is average or excellent or not.
If you do something I don't like I will be sure to tell you Kelli. You know I have told you in the past when something looks average and not excellent to me. Most of your work is excellent in my opinion and you deserve to be amongst the top ten photographers on this site. Only getting two reviews means nothing at all when it comes to people liking or not liking your work. It only means it was never promoted.
I don't believe anyone at all who says they don't consider their own work to be good or bad. I always have an opinion about my own work being above average, below average or just average. I will presume others also judge their own work in the same way I judge my own. If they don't, what makes them proud of it if they are proud of it at all?
We all love what we do. If we didn't we would not do what we do.
Most of your work is excellent Kelli and I am sure your customers are all very happy with it. Have you ever had an unhappy customer? If your business gets spread more via word of mouth and recommendations from happy customers then you are far more successful than you might realize. Your excellence speaks for itself.
I agree there are some real gems out there that never get seen due to lack of promotion. I see them like hidden treasures and I love hunting for them and finding them.
If I view a work and don't review it, it is because of the obvious as well as not having enough time to comment on everything I like let alone commenting on everything I don't like. It takes far more time and effort to explain why I don't like something than it does to say I like it. I think that is why some people only say what they like about something and avoid saying what they do not like.
The game of reviewing to collect member dollars also forces people to make time to do what they don't necessarily want to do if they want to earn play money to play the game of promoting their own work to get comments. Those who do not particularly wish to review are forced to pay real money if they want to promote their work.
I discovered words need to be chosen very carefully when people do not like something in case the artists gets offended and reacts in an adverse manner like muting or reporting them to Admin for harrassing them or being rude and offensive.
Tip toeing and pirouetting around the tulips without bruising any of them is not easy when people have huge feet and never learned to dance.
The "tulips" tend to tell the clumsy dancers to get out of their garden. They only want the ones in the garden who do not bruise any tulips by trampling them under foot. It makes it difficult to learn anything of value when the tulips keep throwing out all those who can't dance properly instead of putting up with a few crushed and bruised egos in order to teach the students how to dance. ;-)
I would like to know which tulips are so soft and gentle that they do not want anyone near them who might crush them or bruise them and I would also like to know which tulips are tough enough to handle the occasional crushing and bruising and still be capable of bouncing back as good as new as if nothing had ever happened to them.
I am one who is very flexible. I can be crushed easily and still bounce back as if nothing ever happened to me. I am tough as old boot leather and soft as a marshmallow all at the same time. Never be afraid to speak your mind when you are around me because I sure speak mine without fearing the consequences. I believe in freedom of expression and do not complain if people say something in way that might appear offensive to others. I might argue with them for "ever" but I do it in order to understand their point of view. When I understand it the argument stops simply because once I can understand a point of view I find it a lot easier to agree with it than if I do not understand it.

Intrepid : I just like to share my work and hope some people appreciate some of the photos that I post. Last year I worried about rankings. This year, I do not. Rather than worry about reviews, I tend to enter photos into contests. For two member dollars, I can have a photo viewed by 30 - 40 members.

November 15 at 8:40AM
donkeyoatey : Ouch!! Hairdressers car? hmmm..
November 15 at 8:52AM
Sinbackkk : Your comment was uncalled for Carl, truly shows your lack of maturity, as well as a sexist and mysogenistic attitude.
November 15 at 9:33AM
Badger : Your point sir?
November 15 at 10:39AM
MGTF Blue : Who says I am "behind", many people seem to misunderstand my postings and it is quite laughable for me to be described as "outspoken".
If you asked 20 people who actually KNOW me to lsit 20 words to describe me I can guaranty that none of the 400 words would be "outspoken".
And Badger, have you not got any NEW put-downs? the one about my mid-engined sports car is a bit stale now.
November 15 at 1:00PM
Kelli Lauck : i'm curious Blue - what on earth makes you think for one second that I was referring to YOU??? I never once referred to any one person in particular - it was a general statement to you are assuming was aimed at you...(are we seeing a theme here yet...)
November 15 at 1:32PM
Kelli Lauck : *that you are assuming
November 15 at 1:33PM
MGTF Blue : I didn't say that I did think that you were directly refering to me Kelli - it is YOU who has assumed that.
My post doesn't say anything about me personally, just what I have seen on this (and other) web sites.
November 15 at 1:37PM
Kelli Lauck : quote: Who says I am "behind", many people seem to misunderstand my postings and it is quite laughable for me to be described as "outspoken".
November 15 at 1:39PM
Kelli Lauck : I didn't assume - I was merely touching upon YOUR own statement
November 15 at 1:41PM
MGTF Blue : I said that in response to Badger who did refer directly to me.
My original point was a general one.
November 15 at 1:47PM
Kelli Lauck : I don't see at all where he referred to you as outspoken...but hey, if the shoe fits...
November 15 at 2:00PM
Skyangel02 : Hi Kelli, Regarding your original statement, are you referring to face to face contact with people or are you referring to messages written on the net?
I can understand how it applies to face to face contact but I do not think it can be applied to forum communication on the internet since that is not spoken but written and none of us hear the tone of voice or see the facial expressions which do say a lot in face to face contact.
What do you think ?
November 15 at 5:01PM
Badger : Gervaise, I have more put downs than you have had hot dinners son.
I have nothing against mid engined sports cars, I have owned many, had them as company cars and there are two technically mid engined cars in my current fleet. I do however have everything against MGTFs, it is an affront to sports cars to use the term 'sports' to describe them, there is nothing even vaguely sports like in it's aesthetics , performance or handling. It belongs in room 101 with the Sinclair C5 and any remaining Citroen Bijou models..... and before you ask, yes I have, I was shafted with 200 TFs to sell because they were so good the Rover garages couldn't sell them - complete buckets of shite every last one of them!
November 15 at 5:09PM
MGTF Blue : I wouldn't call 0-60 in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 137 poor performance. It is widely regarded as having superb road handling and aesthetics is all about personal tastes.
But we digress.
November 15 at 5:31PM
Badger : Sadly you have bought a lifestyle statement that is slower than my diesel engined Citroen C6 and can't out accelerate either of my elderly Rovers, both of which are significantly faster too. My Cerbera would be doing the ton a long time before you even get to 50 and my Scimitar farts in the general direction of a TF when it comes to top speed, it could probably out accelerate it too if it wasn't an auto.
I put it to you that only two descent cars have ever worn the MG badge, the Maestro Turbo and the RV8 which was actually 'seriously sexy' as topless cars go.
November 15 at 6:40PM
MGTF Blue : Badger the trick when pulling someones chian is not to pull too hard or it will break - MG Maestro Turbo - lol
November 16 at 5:05AM
Badger : Pull your head out from your arse. Even today it is only surpassed in acceleration by the MG RV8 and the XPower SV/SVR and has truly blissful handling, you really could chuck a Maestro into a corner safe in the knowledge that it would still be facing forward as you exit. It's faster than the MG TF 160 too.
November 16 at 7:08AM
MGTF Blue : Badger - I was SURE you were winding me up but I do believe you are serious.
Take a look at number 8 on this list and where is the MG TF I wonder?
http://www.buyyourcar.co.uk/news/article/top-10-worst-britishmade-cars-of-all-time/12818
November 16 at 8:19AM
Sinbackkk : So lovely to see you two bonding! Weeping tears of joy! See, we CAN all get along.
November 16 at 9:13AM
Badger : On the same website the same author wrote: MG's transformation has been stunning. In just a couple of years, it has gone from being "that company that used to make crap cars" to "that company that makes crap cars."
November 16 at 6:09PM
Badger : Sinbackk, don't even get me started on how poor American cars are!
November 16 at 6:11PM
Skyangel02 : Sinbackkk is weeping tears of joy. I am crying tears of laughter. You guys crack me up. Too funny.
Now you can all go and take photos of your best cars and compare them in a contest. I am sure there are some car contests around the place. If not, please feel free to create one.

Kelli Lauck :
I wonder if some people realize the picture they have painted of themselves on here...
November 14 at 9:22PM
blairwacha : Kinda makes you wonder, Kelli...
November 15 at 12:05AM
Skyangel02 : Self portraits are always interesting. ;-)
November 15 at 4:34AM
MGTF Blue : I take it you do relaise that firstly you only get a tiny glimpse of what a person is like from what they say on a web site such as this and secondly they might be deliberately acting out of character. It is easy to be something that you are not when using a keyboard.
November 15 at 5:30AM
phil1950 : Some paint a real ugly picture of themselves.
November 15 at 6:51AM
MGTF Blue : Maybe so Phil1950 but the chances are it is not a TRUE reflection of themselves.
November 15 at 7:15AM
phil1950 : Chances are it is a VERY TRUE reflection of themselves.
November 15 at 7:26AM
Cassandra01 : I think phil's point is that if someone is acting "out of character" in a negative way online it is truly a less than desirable character trait...and that is the true reflection.
November 15 at 7:44AM
blairwacha : I think a person's true character becomes more obvious through their actions than through what they say about themselves.
November 15 at 8:13AM
MGTF Blue : Well said blair - none of you can know what anybody is REALLY like from mere words on a web site (which can easily be taken in a way they were not meant).
November 15 at 1:09PM
Kelli Lauck :
I am going to ask you all for a huge favor, because I believe in the power of prayer. My father in law is in intensive care and has been intubated and is taking a turn for the worse. Please please say a prayer (or two) for me and my family. Would be greatly appreciated.
