I don't know if anyone listened to NPR today, but there was an excellent discussion about the ethics of documenting tragedy. If you google NPR, Documenting tragedy: The ethics of photojournalism you should be able to find it.
No One Special : I did, many ethical questions raised concerning photographers and tabloid rags who purchase their photographs. What position do you support?

EvaB : I appreciated the photographer who said that she asks herself "will this photo harm anyone" before she shoots. I think we need to really take a look at what our motives are when taking extremely personal shots of people.

Inner Eye : As the saying of taking pictures, "Get the Shot". After getting the shot, one must internalize the harm/moral it can do, to each person involved, including the photographer. If safety of others or the photographer is involved, It not worth it then.

EvaB : Unfortunately, as one woman expressed in the interview, to grieving people the very act of photographers pushing in to "get the shot" can be very humiliating and traumatic.
