The picture is a merge of three photos. The native figures a taken from two different photos of a typical Mexican Folk art Nativity. The small [about 4"] clay figurines are handmade and hand painted. Truth they are carefully handled small scratches and scars from the many years of use are visible. I could have cloned them but I think it adds to the charm of the figurines.
Down here in the Yucatan the Nativities aren't set up at once but with their timely appearance. The baby is not in the scene before Christmas day.
The figurines were placed on a photo especially taken to be used as background. The musical notes are from a scan of the original old Christmas carol. Parts of this scan were transferred to the collage. The star is from my private clipart collection.
The origin of the old Christmas carol "Away in a Manger" is surrounded by so many legends that it seams impossible to find the true roots.
In 1887 it was published J.R. Murray as Luther's Cradle Hymn. It is said that Martin Luther wrote music and words for his children. This legend is widely believed but untrue. Luther didn't write it. The carol is almost unknown in Germany and there aren't any versions in German language.
The carol was first sung in the US. It seams that the carol is the work of an unknown folk artist in the early 1800's and passed down the generations orally. There were only the two verses in the first publications until 1887 when a three verse version was published by Ch. H. Gabriel. If this third verse were discovered from an unknown version or written new is again in the nebulous areas of history. Wile the roots are still unknown the song is one of the most beloved carols spreading it's message of Peace on Earth in beautiful simple tunes and words.
