The Genovese towers were built in the 16th century on the request of the villagers to be protected themselves against the pirates. Since 1530, the Genoa republic had ordered the construction of 90 towers on the Corsican coast. These lookouts situated at strategic points permitted to prevent and defend from barbarian attacks and others dangers coming from the sea. The unusual square Tower of Porto is one of the most visited towers in Corsica. The tower sits on a rocky outcrop at a height of 45 metres (148 ft) in the Gulf of Porto.
