The Color Blue - Art Contest Entry
Neomarica is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants related to the Iris family. They are native to Mexico, Central- and South America and the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The species in the painting is Neomarica northiana originating from Brazil, but introduced to other countries of tropical America.

The name is composed from the Greek word neo, meaning new, and the Roman nymph Marcia.

The stalk looks just like another leave until the flower emerges. When the plant is pollinated the stalk gets longer and falls down allowing the new plantlet to root.
