Butterflies Contest Entry
A great place to see butterflies up close is at Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, FL. It is a very expansive property with not only butterflies, but tropical birds, gardens, plants for sale, incredible landscaping and so much to do. This beautiful, but poisonous butterfly is a Rosina (Postman) which is a sub-species of Heliconius Melpomene, and can be found from Mexico to northern South America. The female lays her eggs on Red Passion Flowers which emit toxin. It is absorbed by the eggs as they mature. Postman butterflies are the only species that can thrive on the flower without being poisoned themselves. The bright colored stripe on this butterfly is a warning to predators.
