Of all crane species in the world, Sandhill Cranes are the most numerous and wide-ranging.

A crane fossil found in Nebraska was estimated to be about 10 millions years old and is identical in structure to the modern day sandhill crane. This fossil evidence points to cranes as the oldest known bird species surviving on Earth.
