Milkweed bursting seedpods

Tripods

I really like the wispy softness of the milkweed seeds. I noticed this plant (which is actually four pods, three open) while I was trying to capture some floating seeds. I liked the way the light was adding a shimmer to the wispy seed tufts as they blew around in the wind.

Butterflies, particularly Monarchs are very attracted to the flowers of this plant in the summer. It is widely thought that the leaves of all milkweed species are the only food that Monarch caterpillars can eat. Due to the widespread use of pesticides wild growing milkweed plants are declining, so people have tried other foods for the caterpillars and have found that they can also eat pumpkin and butternut squash.
