Melanerpes Lewis
The Lewis' Woodpecker [Melanerpes Lewis] is a North American bird, native to the Western and Central United States, but might be migrate into Southern Alaska in summer. The bird is 10-11 inches [25-28 cm] in length. Open woodlands, groves and areas with scattered trees are its habitat. The bird is set apart from other woodpecker species by the unusual black-green color of its broad, rounded wings and its back without any markings. The bird has a crimson face, gray collar and breast and a reddish belly. The behavior and flight pattern also differs from all other known woodpecker species. The bird likes to sit on wires and perches. The flight of the Lewis' Woodpecker is a smooth glide why the bird snaps insects from the air. The bird supplements his diet with berries and nuts.
The bird is named after William Lewis, widely known and famous from his expedition with Meredith Clack from St. Louis to the Pacific coast 1804 till 1806.
