I have a favourite red tablecloth from home which I was going to use, but could not resist this picture as it fitted, 'using Red' so perfectly, both visually and politically. I taught at Ocean University QIngdao, a former German protectorate, a city which still has a lot of its germanic buildings etc There is a joke that the Ambassador was called back home by the Kaiser, who sacked him saying: you spent so much money on building projects in Qingdao that we had not enough for the war and lost it! hence the beer-stein vase is absolutely appropriate. I brought the little red flag home with me to remind me daily of that very happy time, /though I did get SARS on one trip, from which it took me three months to get better, all part of the fun of teaching abroad!!/..The flag has since been stolen along with all sorts of reminders from China, all the very expensive silk ones from Beijing, Tai'an and my other venues there. Fortunately, I took a photograph of the little flag first and smile to myself when ever I see it! Thank goodness for cameras and mobiles.
