Flower Photos Contest Entry
There are many different species of bromeliads on our property and this is one of my favorites, Aechmea Chantinii. When the stalk and flower head first appear on the plant, the flower head is a very large, bright coral bud and as it matures, one coral leaf of the bud at a time will open to reveal the braided beauty inside. It is one of the most desirable Species in the Aechmea family, with its bright green leaves contrasting with intense frosted banding. This plant can grow to very large sizes of up to 24" - 30" tall and 18" wide. Chantinii is often used in landscapes here in South Florida as it can be acclimatized into locations receiving full sun for part of the day. As this plant comes from very tropical habitat, it is more sensitive to cold than most Aechmeas.
