I spent some time on a Sheffield University botanical illustration course in the hopes of working in art, but left it after a few weeks as a teaching post in China came up. I am not sure if I should mention that to accompany this painting. Maybe I should add some lines? My lock-down acrylics are all very bright and vibrant, maybe as an antidote to being locked in! This was inspired by my mum's culture, as I have never encountered such vibrancy by the English in my 64 yrs living in England. In the Hungarian culture, married women wear black embroidered blouses in such colours. Single women wear white. Married men wear black trousers single men white trousers.-- so the wife soon knows if he has been philandering. Married women wear what is called Matron caps to cover their hair and single women may wear loose hair and ribbons, slides etc. The girl looking for a husband wears her petticoat longer than her skirt. Skirts can be bright colours. However in my dad's Ukrainian culture, married women wear white or any colour embroidered flowers, they are not quite as strict as we were. Please do remember that Hungarians are the offshoot of Attila the Hun from Mongolia, whose camps were very, very strict, if famous. At that the German Kingdoms were separate, so their Pinclings were sent to our camps for seven years before they became Kings. These princlings were treated as strictly as the common soldier and could not go into the centre of the camps, women's sections without an older woman. It is a total history of its own. Hence we usually back the Austrians and Germans, because our word is our bond to eternity. However, after WW2, we no longer feel this way in our country. Their war was not honourable though we died in it.
