It is estimated that there are 100,000 glaciers in Alaska with 616 that are officially named. This is the Matanuska Glacier, located about 100 miles north-east of Anchorage. We took a drive there yesterday.
This glacier is 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. It stands at 13, 176 feet (4020 m) above sea level. This is the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States. It?s terminus feeds the Matanuska River . This of course is just a small section of the glacier . There are three mountain ranges surrounding this Glacier. The Alaska, Chugach and Talkeetna Ranges.
