Wildlife Photo Contest Contest Entry
These wonderful birds are Yellow Crowned Night Herons, one of my favorite species of the Heron family. Every year they nest in my back yard, utilizing the same nest from the year's before. This is the fifth year I have observed them courting, mating and raising babies. This year, four babies hatched. They've already lost most of their baby fluff and are quickly maturing. Very soon they will attempt to fly, and hopefully all will succeed. Being that this species builds their nests over water, it is most likely death to those that fall in. Unfortunately, I have witnessed the alligators waiting patiently below (as they are right now) for one chick to either fall out of the nest or failing to stay aloft when learning to fly. Taken with my Canon EOS 90D and a Sigma 150-600 lens. No tripod, no flash.
