Translucent Petals.

A Mallow?

July 26, 2013 I followed an overgrown dirt road, now just a path up to an abandoned estate. None of the buildings remained. I poked around awhile and found this beautiful flower growing amongst other flowering plants. I am not sure what it is called but because of the five flower petals and their shape I think it might be a member of the Mallow family. What really got my attention was the flower petals. They are very thin and translucent. The other thing that got my attention was that there were a number of plants and trees that belonged on the other side of the Atlantic. Now I was curious. Some research revealed that the property was owned by a couple who were very financially involved with the theater - Broadway and London. They spent the winter in London for the 1912 theater season then booked first class passage back to New York aboard the titanic. The rest is history. As for the couple, they left no heirs so the property resolved to the state of New Hampshire for back taxes. In 1929, someone set fire to the main building and it was a total loss. The estate grounds are still accessible. There is a small lake with a fine outcropping of rock overlooking the lake that just begs for a picnic. Hope you like the post as much as I did photographing it ... Bob
