Beautiful mid-flight capture, Willie, of this heron! I love the framing of rippled greens reflecting the surroundings as well as the rich lighting that affords such great detailing on this beauty. Great overall compositional strengths. What a great panning moment.

Those GBH can be tough to capture! Your composition is pleasing. The background is uncluttered. I think the eye is just a little less than sharp but that may be a result of resizing for FAR. Conventional wisdom in the bird photography arena favors not clipping the wings or bodies of the birds. This isn't a "hard and fast" rule but is widely applied. As I said, I like your composition, but it might be a better image if you had been able to include the entire bird. Just something to think about as you continue to photograph this wise old bird. Well done!

Thank you so very much! This was a quick shot and did not have a second chance.

Yeah, I know. (I know because I have so many of them.) But your are going to get a lot of 2nd chances, and 3rds and 4ths. Just keep at it and enjoy the personal growth!!!

Fate and your great reflexes and camera skills gave you the best moment and shot you could have asked for! I just love this picture. The detail is excellent, and I like the composition much better than if the whole heron were in the picture - this way gives the picture such dynamism, such a sense of flight. Or did you crop it this way? If it's cropping, then great cropping, lol. Wonderful colors and contrast of background to subject. Just a great shot!

Thank you so very much! No cropping at all. This was a quick shot and only had one chance. I always focus on the eye but was too close to get all of it in.

When we were studying Avian Photography we learned about cropping this and cropping out that but your image is all about the narrative of flight and you couldn't have cropped better if you tried!

This is serendipity you say? Well, the God of Heron's and the God of Photography was on your side this day!

To catch this bird like you have gives us such a strong feeling of movement, of flight and we feel and hear the sussurus of his wings as he passes by.

This looks like a painting,it is so rich in natural colours, the blue of his wings against the green of water and the eye caught with our eye provides a level of communication between your art, subject and us.

You canvas is clean as a whistle and if you cloned out debris from the water you did a magical job.

The birds face, bright and kissed by light is that element that brings out awe in the viewer.

I'm sorry but will not go into technical aspects of this image for they are strong and well executed. It is the spirit of your image that hold us tied to it in awe....and yes, you have awakened that OH WOW feel within me and that is the only time I give out a 6.

Excellent, simply excellent.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful photo!! Such awesome clarity while in flight. The detail and sharpness of the colors and feathers on the bird, and just the whole photo in general is great. Like how you framed it with the heron coming into the shot, creates good motion.

As much as we try to sneak up in these guys, they seem to be one up on us and take off! LOL This time it looks like things worked out for you very well. Nice job of catching this guy in surprose mode. Love the way he's flying into the frame.

Good Luck in the Contest!
