Beautiful image. Great colors and the Heron is sharp as a tack. I like the composition. As soon as you step into the picture there he is.
The water colors are different but very nice and they support the bird very well.
I like this one.

Well nice shot willie,and i think even sange would be proud of this one,good detail and like the use of the log plus reflection in this,would not normanally think this would do for the comp,but then it has subdued colours in this,good luck in the contest...brian

thank you so very much! Who knows what the judges are looking for. I was running out of time and could not find any other to enter so since I have so many herons I just went with this!

First of all this is of course a very nice photo of a Heron, but the colors of fall reflected in the water are also really well captured. I don't know how many times I have seen this log sticking out of the water, but it for sure adds interest. The bird is of course standing out from all this in the most excellent way.
Your photo is of course nice and sharp as always showing clear and well defined details in every part of the bird, and you have also captured a lovely shine in the water. The exposure is perfect.
The cropping is neatly done, and the bird is well placed within the frame. This of course means a good and well balanced composition. It is an excellent shot with a very good DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.

Thank you so very much for a very nice review and comments. I saw this bird land while I was just sitting in my car with the engine running. I shot a bunch of shots & then moved the car closer and shot a bunch more. I shot from different angles. I think I have about 200 shots taken this day. I also had some others taken in the same spot but different day.
The fish and wildlife department has drained this lake to dig it deeper so now the area is a mess now and will be a few years before it will be back to normal.

The back ground reflections are wonderful, they really make the Heron and his log leap out at you, like the foot hovering over the still water.
