A very nice charcoal. I like the range of tones and the whimsical look on your subject's face. The left hand is particularly nice. Best of luck in the contest.

I love this piece. I admire the use of charcoal in many ways. The shading is great and the fine lines of the child's hands are great work of art. You are a wonderful artist!!

Hi Vivian thanks so much for sharing this delightful rendering of the child on his first birthday. what a lovely gift to offer his parents.. You have truly captured a most natural pose .. Love he detail on his facial features. A beautiful small lacing his face with his eyes well fixed on something in the distance.. I love the strokes used to create his hair.. It frames his face well and I can see good texture in his hair by the use of the highlights.. Excellent use of light and shade to render the expression on his face. . and promote his cheek bones and jaw line .. His arms are placed gently on the table, and his little rolls of skin show he is well covered and boasting that cute plump appearance that little children possess. His shirt is nicely rendered to hug his body .. with the shades of light and dark showing the creases around his shoulders and over his chest area.. The little fingers resting on the table are so life like.. babies' fingers seem to have so much movement and flexibility.. well rendered.. The cake on the plate is a wonderful focal point with its candle burning brightly ready to be blown out.. It draws the eyes into the scene nicely and looks inviting .. There is a very peaceful emotion emanating from within and a feeling of love and contentment fills my mind as I cast my eyes over your scene. Thanks for showing us this amazing drawing.. It is a real pleasure to review. cheers mel very best of luck in the contest

Intriguing image because you have to decide what the boy is thinking. He could simply be distracted but is reaching for the cupcake; or, he is unhappy about this and is pushing the cake away. The picture is nicely rendered with good use of the medium.

I tried to make the child have a more surprised expression. Maybe the light affected the expression a bit.

    Thanks for the review,

Awww, this is an endearing image of a child's simplest FIRST birthday celebration!
While most first celebrants are given the most lavishly decorated cakes with matching cartoon characters or superhero icons, this one is contented by showing us his impish angelic smile...

Great story telling factor.
Effective use of dramatic illumination.
Fine tonal range.
Best of luck in the contest!

Thanks for sharing...
