Magnificent shot of her moving in on prey. You have given us every detail of a perfect closeup...right down to her scars. The slight amount of brush gives her a very nice depth. Well done!

    Thank you for your very complimentary comments. She is a lovely animal.

Lucky you that you had the opportunity to visit Tanzania and be able to take photos like this. From the pose of the lioness it is easy to see that she was out hunting, and the light is falling on the head in such a lovely way. It is of course a pity with the dry plant in front of the face, but it is not too distracting, and the lioness is standing out from the background in an excellent way.

Your photo is sharp with clear details, and I think you have captured the eyes so well. I also think the exposure is very good.

Since the lioness is placed so far to the left, I think you have a bit too much negative space on the right, and I think it would be a good idea to crop a bit more on this side. Still this is an all together lovely and well taken photo Christine, and with a very good DOF.

    You have a good eye. Because they hunt in the savannah grass it is almost impossible to get a shot without something in the way. I think you might be right about the negative space on the right but not sure it can be fixed with it posted.
    I have indeed been fortunate to go there, and I know it. Being there was like taking some sort of addictive drug and I think about going back all the time.

    You can always do changes to a photo and replace it, unless it is in a contest. People do that all the time. Nice to hear that you liked so much going to Africa, and I would not mind going myself.

    Good to know. Go to Africa...If safety is a concern the Smithsonian offers a nice package.

welcome to this site Christine, hope you'll enjoy;
this is an excellent wildlife portrait as I like, not a zoo taken pic; perfect framing wit sharp focus;
if you have time, please have a look to my portfolio: every September I posted dozens of pics of wildlife from Africa: Botswana, Namibia, South Africa;

    I have started looking through your portfolio. Most impressive. We were in different areas of Africa about the same time. You caught some great dune shots in Namibia. There was a nice compilation of family, landscape and wildlife. You had some really great butterfly shots as well. Like you I like my animals wild.
    I appreciate your comments given all of your experience, it means a lot. And thank you for your warm welcome!

It's a very nice shot of this lioness. You have caught her preying look, slouching forward, jaws dropped fangs exposed and eyes targeting on her prey. Definitely good use of light her fur on head and ears has come out very well ..... an interesting piece and good notes.

That's a beautiful image of the lioness! She is well focused, the image is clear, I see good detail in her fur, her face with the mouth open to reveal her teeth, beautiful clear view of her golden eyes, I can see her eyelashes! Exposure is well managed, her colors and tones are natural. I might consider cropping a bit more from the right to bring her up even closer. Well presented!

    I am going to try the additional cropping. I wasn't sure if it would minimize the tracking effect of her facial features and eyes.
    Great comments, thank you for the recommendation. If it does look better can II change it out.

    Thank you Dick! She was really close and it is almost too easy to lose the perspective that she is wild and you are just potential meat. I got really lucky on this one, better to be lucky that good they say.
    Thanks again, I appreciate your review.

You are a fearless person. I go to the zoo for photos like this. Your settings were perfect even if you didn't know what they were. I like the cropping you did with this as well. It carries my eye in the direction of where she is looking totally focused on her prey. I'm glad she wasn't looking at you this way.

    All the comments to date have been really good. There was one suggestion about cropping out more of the right side. Mama Mary, what do you think?
reply by mamamary on 07-Feb-2019
    If you did crop I wouldn't take that much off. There is a little black mark towards the top on the right. Maybe only that much. I like that he is making me look where he is looking.
