INFORMATION
I am a gardener of long standing and a photographer of not such long standing. I find the two subjects go hand in hand. I also enjoy antiques and I like to enter consumer competitions. For images of my garden, plants and insects, please visit www.images-by-susan.com

I live in the countryside where there are plenty of photographic opportunities. However, my favourite form of photography is macro which I use a great deal when taking images of flowers and insects found in my garden.

I write once a month for a nationwide gardening magazine: I have my own website and more of my work is being shown by a stock image agency who specialize in flower/insect images.

Finally, over the course of many years I have won lots of prizes associated with gardening.

Last year I had two of my photographs commended by Kew who run the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition. These appear in their book which is published showing all the winners.

susanlen : I know if you submit a regular photograh (not manipulated apart from basic alterations) it would go into a contest under "Photograph". If you entered a contest with a photograph that was highly manipulated and altered so much it was entirely different, it goes under Mixed Media, but where does a picture go that you have created entirely from your imagination where the subject did not exist until you created the scene. Is this mixed media too? I suppose I am really asking what is the difference between Mixed Media and Digital Art?
March 11 at 12:50PM
donkeyoatey: Mixed media uses your own pics, digital, is using stock pictures, or drawing on them.
    March 11 at 6:17PM
Skyangel02: If you do a digital art work from scratch using no clip art or photos or any other added pictures, it goes under Digital 2D art.
If you add anything like clip art to it, put it under digital creations.

susanlen : Hi everyone, I am trying to download some brushes for Photoshop Elements 10. The file does not go to the correct directory to make them appear automatically under brushes when in Elments 10. Does anyone know how I get them in the correct folder. Many thanks.
February 8 at 7:01AM
    Echo7: Hey...click computer-disk drive-program files-adobe-elements-plugins-brushes...drag or copy not paste into that folder.
    February 8 at 8:58AM
Echo7: Copy and paste....sorry. Not not...dumb turdberry PlayBook predictive texting

    February 8 at 9:01AM
Badger: Find the folder they are in then copy and paste them to the following folder, C:> Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > Presets > Brushes. If you are a Mac user it will be, Applications > Adobe Photoshop Elements > Presets > Brushes.

They may have come as a zip file in which case you must unzip them before copying and pasting.

If you don't know where they have downloaded too carry out a global search in 'my computer' for files with a .abr extension or .zip files.

MGTF Blue: Hi susan, I must admit that I don't use brushes very much myself, can you let me know what kind of brushes that you have added and why they are better than the the ones you get with PS E10
    February 8 at 1:38PM
Badger: Blue, you have always been able make your own custom brushes in full versions of Photoshop so I presume that you can in Elements.
    February 8 at 6:18PM
MGTF Blue: I wouldn't know Badger, like I said I seldom use them and if I do then ones that are provided are ample for my limited needs.
The only real variation that I require is soft or hard edges.

susanlen : Many thanks for all your help. I am still working on it - nowhere near as simple as loading new plugs-in!

susanlen : Does anyone know how long it takes for a book to be reviewed? I have had a book under review for some considerable time. When I look at it there is a symbol displayed saying it has been put forward for review. I submitted another book a few weeks afterwards and no symbol appears on that, but when I asked Tom about it, he said it was under review. Possibly I am just being impatient but perhaps someone can advise me
December 2 at 6:32PM
donkeyoatey: It can take a VERY long time! But you WILL get an in depth critique of each and every picture, and what you can do to improve it!
    December 2 at 7:49PM
MGTF Blue: I have looked at these 'book revievws' a couple of times and can't quite understand what they are all about.
How many images are there per 'book'?
How do you select what is included?
    Who reviews the 'book'?
    December 3 at 3:57AM
Skyangel02: Apparently it can take anywhere between six months to a year.
    December 3 at 4:15AM
susanlen : Many thanks for the advice. I WILL have to be patient, won't I!
    December 3 at 10:04AM
donkeyoatey: It rarely takes THAT long, and never a year..the book must be at least five pages, but any amount over that is fine. The book needs to have a good "flow" or story line.
    December 3 at 6:21PM
davezep: I don't really want to add anything sensible,I just wanted to say, donkayoatey, ha that is so cool.
I wish I had said that.........
    ....you will oscar you will.

susanlen : I shoot in RAW format and then convert my photographs to TIFF files. Usually end up with a file 68 MB. When I convert to JPEG file sized is reduced to around 14 MB which is fine for my purposes. However, I have noticed that when I use software to reduce noise on my TIFF files, when I save as JPEGs, the file size is reduced to 4.8 MB. This is only happening on files where noise software has been used. Any ideas what is happening and how can I rectify this. I need at least 14 JPEG files! Help!
October 30 at 7:57PM
blairwacha: Susan, I don't think I can explain that much of a radical change. I don understand that noise reduction happens by making sided by side pixels more similar, which in effect blurs the photo slightly. When enough side by side pixels are the same, the amount of file apce to store that digital information is reduced. I can see that making for a reduction of file size from 14 to 13.5, but again, not as severe as you seem to have happening. WHat software are yoou using for noise reduction? Sorry I can't be of more help. Blair

phil1950: JPEG files are compressed and you will lose resolution. Convert to PNG to upload. TIFF and PNG are both referred to es lossless files (no loss of resolution).

susanlen : Thanks for your comments and advice. I cannot save to PNG files unfortunately since the photographs concerned are for a stock agency which accepts my work. They insist on JPegs of high quality. Setting is at 12. I use Imagenomic.com software and I have been back to the software provider who confirms that noise reducing software will affect the size of a file. I am told, however, that even with smaller files the quality will not be affected and I should still be able to get very good printouts. I am also told that the software is used by lots of photographers who provide stock work and they do not have a problem. Will just have to hope my stock agency is OK about it!
    October 31 at 2:20PM
phil1950: I upload to a stock agent too. I keep a full size JPEG for them and resized PNG for FAR. Downsizing causes a certain amount of resolution.

susanlen : I am a little confused! I have been reading about creating a book of photographs which I would like to do. I would then like to have it reviewed by the Diamond Review committee by submitting a request. Do I need to purchase a Book Balloon and then create my book? When that is done do I then purchase a Diamond Review Request? Help!!
October 2 at 4:32PM
donkeyoatey: Put your book together, then purchase diamond review seal..put on the front page of your book, it will be submitted! The book balloon is to get the book reviewed if you wish to!

susanlen : I see many dragonflies where I live. There is a canal approx. 50 feet away from my front door. On a sunny day, these chaps dash up and down the canal. Very difficult to capture with the camera as they move so fast. All are blue. However, in my garden I find brown, red and green types. I have never seen a dragonfly feeding. Does anyone know what they eat? Do they eat vegetation or other insects?
October 2 at 4:30AM
donkeyoatey: They eat insects..they also will stop and inspect sweet thins like fruit!
    October 2 at 6:59AM
Cephus: If you see one on a perch and it leaves, 9 times out of 10, they will return to the same perch withing a minute or two.
    October 2 at 11:51AM
susanlen : Oh, I will have to leave some fruit out and see if that attracts them! Mind end up with lots of wasps though. Yes, I have noticed they do return to the same stop if you happen to disturb them. Thanks for the info.

susanlen : I have been looking at Mystical Lighting software and downloaded a trial version. However, lots of things do not appear on the trial version, like rain, snow, lighting effects, etc. I use Elements 9 and wonder whether Mystical Lighting works with this software. It has not appeared as a plug-in, as other downloads have done. It is on my desktop as a standalone. Before I take the plunge and purchase, does anyone know whether it supports Elements 9? Also, does anyone out there in FAR land run this software and what do you think? Is it worth the money? Thanks.

susanlen : I have reserved a spot in an upcoming competition. I now find I do not have an appropriate entry since I deleted a file containing images that I might have used. Does anyone know the procedure for cancelling my reserved spot or do I just not submit a photograph? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as a newcomer to the site
September 12 at 11:50AM
avmurray: I don't think you can cancel a reserved spot, but I might be wrong. I suggest that you send a message to Tom and ask him. It is of course possible also to recover the file you have deleted. It is still on your hard disk, and you only need the correct software to get it back. Look up Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery on the net.
    September 12 at 12:00PM
susanlen : Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I deleted the file from my hard-drive and it was not backed up on my back-up drive. I will email Tom and see what can be done. Thank you!
    September 12 at 12:11PM
donkeyoatey: Sometimes, i reserve a spot, and have no entry, you can not get your money back, so I just let it go! more in the pot for the others! LOL
    September 12 at 12:44PM
susanlen : OK, that's what I thought! Just did not want to create problems. Many thanks.
    September 12 at 6:07PM
Regina E.H-Ariel: if reserve a spot and connot participate - will not receive our member dollars back and we just do not submit - when that happened to me last time because I entered a art instead of Photography I wrote and advised this to the fanreview administration and they just noticed it and said to advise and let it go - hope that answers your question
    September 14 at 2:28PM

susanlen : I have created a competition called Beautiful Bokeh. Filled out all the details and was told it is up and running but I cannot see it on the listings, nor can I reserve a spot, even though members dollars have been withdrawn from account. Help!
September 2 at 10:38AM
Stacey Nagy: It is there, I just reserved a spot.
    September 2 at 11:38AM
Jerrica: Got to your profile page, then click on the contests box and see if it's already there.
    September 2 at 3:53PM

susanlen : Uploaded Noiseware Professional which I am using as a Plug-in with Elements10. Used in on one photograph so far but I can see it is going to come in very handy. Works very well eliminating noise. Thanks for recomendations for products. This software was very easy to download.

susanlen : Hi, I am very new to the site so still trying to find my way around. I love gardening and I love photography and I find the two go hand in hand. Most days I am gardening but with a camera slung around my neck! Not very good for the camera I expect, but you can bet the minute I put it down somewhere, an insect flies by or something happens which I cannot capture because I cannot get to the camera quickly enough! I am sure others who share both passions have similar problems!
August 10 at 7:58AM
Passionate1: Yes... That's the fun game of it all :)
Sometimes I feel like a tourist in my surroundings :). Welcome:)
Have fun and don't hesitate to ask.
There are great people here to help.
Have a fantastic day :). Keep a bag for the cap and a lint free cloth handy should you take the camera in hand so fast as to get the lens. I've done it :)
