Kathryn Burke Petrillo has been a serious artist since 1967. She received a certificate in graphic arts from Studio School Of Art and Design, Philadelphia, PA. After working in graphic arts from 1969 to 1975, she went to Atlantic Cape Community College, to study art and science. Kathryn graduated in 1977 with an AS in art and minor in Archeology. Kathryn has shown her work in the Southern part of NJ.
Kathryn moved to Syracuse in 1978 where she met, Frank Goodnow, professor at Syracuse University. He was a color expert, She delved into the study of color which continues. This focus has been primary as Kathryn investigated many styles, techniques and mediums.
The second person that has been a powerful influence has been Ty Marshal. He is an artist, curator, community choreographer of thought, art and history. He was instrumental in Kathryn's ability to have multiple shows and a catalyst of change in her aesthetic thought and work.
Today, Kathryn is interconnecting all of her interests which are diverse and intellectual as well as metaphorical and visual. Her interests in pre-historic symbols, language, color, environment, the human figure and humor are merging together to create her new work.
Kathryn is in private collections across multiple states in the US.

Reviewing is an art. Some people think it is an entitlement. If you are ignorant of art history than you really need to study it... Not only would it amaze and show you stuff you never thought of, but it could make you see that no one needs to be so negative here. I am sometimes when I am consistently being reviewed by ignorant of art history people. Forgive them for they no not what they do and forgive me because I do know better. I just can't abide by ignorant wanna bees. There I said what I feel. Just remember it isn't how popular you are . Munch and Van Gogh were not famous or even noticed by most of the world. Now it costs a lot for their stuff. Did you ever ask why? Study art, work hard at what you do and try to find one good thing in every ones work. No one here is an expert reviewer.
All of my work is conceived, and created by my own unique style, with passion , unless specifically stated. St. Leo used a sketch of the Mona Lisa I created, by using a photo on Wikipedia.

avmurray : Yes, and I still ask why, because I don't like Munch's art even if I am Norwegian. The rest you have stated I can agree about. I love art history.
September 11 at 4:54PM
Badger : I've never understood why we call Munch's series THE scream, surely they should be the screams or screamers as he produced about fifty of them!
September 11 at 5:20PM
Sinbackkk : Thats funny Carl! YOUR a scream! Did you get my p.m. last nite?
September 11 at 5:30PM
Badger : ?? nope.
September 11 at 5:38PM
avmurray : It excists 4 original versions of the painting. One of them is owned by a private person. It was sold in May this year for 119,9 million dollars. Two are owned by the Munch museum in Oslo and the last is owned by the National Gallery in Oslo. I think the title is due to bad translation. LOL "The scream" in Norwegian is SKRIK. Pural; screams is also SKRIK. So in Norwegian there is no difference between singular and pural. Which means that the piece of art could as well be called just Screams.
September 11 at 5:44PM
Badger : Weren't there about fifty stone lithographs signed by him too?
September 11 at 5:51PM
avmurray : I don't know the exact number, but it was quite a few. By the way kdp painter, Munch was quite famous even before his death. He decorated the inside of quite a few public places in Oslo. Like the University Concert Hall and the Town Hall. He was probably not a well known artist all over the world, but he was not exactly starving. The largest collection of Mumch's work owned by a private person is by the way American.

kbp painter : I first encountered Munch when I was a child. I remembered the "scream of Nature, " when my 12 year old niece died her name was Rosie " I wrote a small poem about that day. The sun rose up red the day that Rosie died was dead. The Scream " is part of that memory. It fit exactly into how I felt at that moment. Just like the "Pieta" evokes deep feelings with people of faith or not-- the one done by Michealangelo. It has great emotional appeal. If not the first, Monk was indeed one of the first expressionistic artist. He ushered in something new and different.

Skyangel02 : When people don't particularly like a work and rate it low because of personal dislike, it does not mean they are being negative about it. It just means it does not appeal to them personally no matter how good it might be technically. I think many artists get too easily offended when people are honest about what they think of their work. As you said, None of us are expert art critiques. All of us can only rate according to our own perception and understanding of the work.
All art is what it is. It will appeal to come people a lot and others will totally hate the same piece and find some fault with it to justify their own dislike.
That is the nature of people. If we understand that none of us would be offended by the opinions of those who don't like our work.
I personally do not like abstracts very much at all but I can easily do them myself and have also posted a few just to see what kind of comments I get on them. I find it amusing that my own work which I would personally rate very low for various reasons has been rated high by people who actually like it.
It just proves to me how people can have totally opposite opinions about the same work and both opinions can be very valid.

I have been working long hours getting pieces ready for a show in Feb/ March. Also I am busy with my volunteer position with this election. After the election I will organize all the work I have done since my last show. I will have a lot to choose from. So I need to create a theme, and design. Might not be on site a lot in these two months

Going on vacation. Leaving tomorrow and back on July 14th. Going with old friend from college. We never took the same classes but she was a fine artist. She hasn't really painted in a while. So maybe I can influence her to do so. Hope to put some photos up. I hope to take some good ones. I am so excited to go on a vacation as I can count on my fingers in one hand how many times I did that since I was an adult.

I am really trying to be polite today. In fact, my painting, the polite scream is so on my mind. This weekend I met a friend, a sculpture, who is dying of melanoma. he is only 72, from Ukraine and has no health insurance and no money. He had fame and now is poor. It breaks my heart to see him in this tragic situation. I am sensitive today and angry with people who have little investment in working as an artist, yet they dare think that they are superior and judge without knowing. The ignorant masses who allow people that work their life creating beauty to be passed over for an abundant of reasons, only to find how poorly they are as judges. It is life. They are the danger to our world. My friend is a sculptor and used bronze and stone. These are considered to be passé by the people who have galleries and buy art today. the medium of both bronze and stone is expensive. I wonder if anyone on this site, if they knew today how expensive a Vincent Van Gogh is, would have bought it then. Most of you would pass it buy as it was too fuzzy and too oddly colored-yes you would. After all, why wouldn't you. He was left out of the major shows of his day. I am sorry to say that today with the 4.4 million working artists, that happens all too much. I weep today for all the injustice the befalls todays artists and wish that those of little talent can at least be kind. Your opinion is worth little, but experience and knowledge combined with an opinion and kindness could change a person's life. Artit create because of who they are and not because how much they sell their work for, although it would be nice if we could make a living wage. Shame on our Culture for valuing the creative arts less then toilet paper.

For all the artist here and photographers that are ready to be helpful and not insult other's work I want to say thanks. To everyone else that is not mentioned above, play nice, share your toys and work well in a group. That is the secret of success. No one every does great things alone. Sometimes the only thing that you become is a legend in your own mind.
Another beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Badger : Are you proposing that one should only pass positive comment about another members work? If so how does that help members improve their work?
I joined this site under the misapprehension that I would receive critical reviews with pointers & guidance from artists better than I am. All I get is 'what a nice picture' - even when I point out obvious flaws in my work.
I resent the fact that to get these flawed reviews I either have to rape my PayPal account or risk being admonished & removed from FAR because I write an honest review.
April 20 at 1:45PM
kbp painter : What I propose is to point out everything that is good or great. Let the artist/photographer find out what they are doing that works. My pet peave is people who have nothing positive to say and this is an example of what they say "I don't like abstract art, so I don't know what to say and then they give a 2.5 or 3 star rating. This is what I get irritated by and nothing else. What good is that, it only shows the person ignorance of critiquing, if not art. But one can't change people, so my choice it to only critique what I like. If I see an emerging artist I will let them know more. Do what you want, that is what I do, but I do not say inane things that just reflect on my own ignorance. Oh an photographers are the worse, not all of them.

Thank all of the people that commented on my work. As a new person on the block, I am overwhelmed with the kindness and support I have received in my first 24 hours which continues. I am glad that I joined this site. I start a photography class Saturday. I have taken pictures for years and have professional photographers in my family, my father included. I always felt I could never utilize the manual setting but I am going to learn. Of course I will paint, but I am curious to see how looking through a lens in a more creative way changes my art.
