Tinlight (an alias) is a working journalist who considers her primary artistic talent to be writing.
Recently she noticed her on-location reporting was becoming more visual, and that at her most inspired she had been using words to paint mind pictures. This stirred a desire to learn more about visual art.
While her lifelong interest in animals and nature initially steered her towards wildlife photography, tinlight is now also experimenting with digital art and traditional drawing.
Tinlight enjoys reviewing the work of others and has been awed by the profusion of talent on display at FanArtReview.
tinlight :
I finally did it: drew something entirely from imagination on a blank sheet of paper and had it come out better than an average two-year-old's effort. That may not sound like much to those of you lucky enough to be natural born artists, but to me, it's huge!

Doris1022 : did you post it? can't wait to see it.

tinlight : Yes, I did. It's in the Outside the Comfort Zone contest.

A badge of honor for an artist: received my first one-star review!
Some people just don't get that this is supposed to be an ART community, not a commercial photography site, and therefore we are presumably supposed to experiment a bit and play with what constitutes art.
Someone didn't appreciate my neglected little rose bush struggling to survive and reproduce with the help of a life-giving tatty green drainpipe. If you're wondering what was so objectionable, you can view it here: http://www.fanartreview.com/displaystory.jsp?id=345034

MGTF Blue : Whilst I will agree that a 1* rating is a bit extreme, I do find it to be a VERY poor photograph and I would only give it 3.5*'s.
I fail to see what is "artistic" about a poorly taken image (flash lighting and composition) of a not very interesting subject.

Cephus : One also has to remember that most things expermental do not work. I also would not give it a "1" but not much higher. Art or Commercial, it is still not a good image. Labeling something as art does not make it better.

Skyangel02 : I agree with the above two comments. Just because something is labelled as art or experimental does not mean everyone must appreciate it or rate it highly. Some things which look great to some people can still look terrible to others. I sometimes post my own work which I would not rate above three myself and end up getting fives and sixes for it. Go figure! It just proves that one mans trash is anothers treasure. Don't let it upset you. Just accept that some like it and some will not. It is always about personal taste.

tinlight : I was actually more amused than upset, and I know experimental doesn't always work, or there wouldn't be any point in experimenting!

kimartist : @ Tinlight: I see you received responses from: All The Usual Suspects, LOL. Aka: The UK Low Score Squad. Well, now I'm curious and must go see this scraggly little rose for myself... :)

tinlight : I think I'll have to resolve all this nonsense by turning it into a mixed-media invention!
