What is the best reason for hosting a contest?
November 10 at 12:26PM
cynnocence : If you have an interest in something and want to compare the work of others on this subject. However, it seems like most host a contest because they have some expertise or some great images in that subject matter. It isn't often when the host of the contest is not a participant looking to win.
November 10 at 12:51PM
webster : I have started many contests in the past, and have not entered them myself. Ducilla starts contests all the time and doesn't enter them himself. I like to start them because I will think of an idea, and like to see how others interpret the idea. I disagree with the comment from cyn regarding not often do hosts not participate.

cynnocence : My friend, If I am wrong about members sponsoring contests in which they participate, then I am happy. I will watch more carefully and see if your observation is correct. Cyn

Skyangel02 : I have started a few contests and always entered them myself but not because I am expert in the area or think I will win. I do it to compare my own work to similar work of others in the voting booths. I think seeing how many votes the work gets is a better indication of how the work rates compared to others than relying on the number of reviews. I have seen works with only two reviews win contests over works which have received over fifteen reviews and even win over works which have received all time best awards.

Echo7 : Im starting a contest. Its called "Any photo taken in Echos garden". The entry fee will be $30. But beware...i find you in my garden i'll through potatoes at you

Happy Snappy : Typical Scot! Such a violent lot! Throws a leek back.

donkeyoatey : when I was a kid, I threw potatoes at my neighbors house....

delephoto : Thank you for sharing your insights on this topic. I have been considering starting a contest. I was just curious as to what motivates those who do. When I come up with a with a topic that inspires me, I will start a contest. Probably just to see how it will turn out. I may or may not enter. Stay tuned...

When looking at an image, I prefer to have my eyes drawn to the points of interest as if taken there by an invisible force field. This can be achieved in a number of ways, color, texture, DOF, leading lines or perhaps a thoughtfully crafted vignette. I much prefer a more subtle but effective vignette over a dark "frame". In many cases they're not even necessary and can detract from the image. What are your thoughts on vignetting? Does it factor into your rating scheme?
October 4 at 8:01PM
DUG : I feel that vignetting has its place. Dark or light depends on the situation and other colors in the shot. It is a simple way to hide distractions close to the border of a shot. I have not been rating for a very long time, but I do not knowingly rate higher or lower because of the use. A soft vignette can imply a dream state.

phil1950 : Vignetting has it's place it can add a dreamy feel or an old world feel if done properly. Having said that we are all art critics as we all know what we like and don't like. How boring would it be if we all liked the same thing. :)
October 5 at 3:37AM
Cephus : I believe that vignette is one of the most ober abused effects that destroys more images than it saves. Properly done in the appropriate image it works but it too often is over done and over used.

Badger : I think they spoil a good salad sometimes but 1000 Island dressing, now that's a different story...
October 5 at 9:19AM
Sinbackkk : 1,000 islands? Nice to be British and rich! I'm quite content with one.
October 5 at 6:33PM
donkeyoatey : Vignetting certainly has it's place, and can be subtle, so one never notices, or it can be blatant..to me there is a use for both. A vignette can also be used subtly in layers to acheive a shadowing effect that is unique..I had a review done, where I was informed that a vignette is only around the sides..to me, that is plain silly..a single leaf can be vignetted in a picture if it is done on layers! I often use four or five layers with different vignetts on each!..it is all about the application!
October 5 at 7:11PM
donkeyoatey : I guess my point is..not all vignetting is equal! LOL

Ok, say you are reviewing, and you come across a magnificent 7-star worthy masterpiece; however, you have already spent all your 5.5/6 stars. Do you go back later once your supply has been replenished and re-rate the piece with additional stars?
September 24 at 7:49PM
Echo7 : No you don't. The star ratings simply don't matter here. If you like a piece that much....your words on that piece will matter far more to the artist than a silly rating. Numbers are nothing. Honesty is everything.
Don't ever lose sight of that
September 25 at 5:31AM
delephoto : Very good point Echo7. However, I am fairly certain that there may be some artists here that do attach meaning to the star ratings. Some say actions speak louder than words. Wouldn't that small action add credence what was said in the review?
September 25 at 12:00PM
Happy Snappy : I have done it a couple of times when the work I saw had an impact on me and I wanted to show it made an impression that made me feel I had to do it even though the person doesn't expect it, it still shows the work means more to you than a money review and made a lasting impression.

September 21 at 12:06PM
Badger : Beware the members that view with blindfolds on!
September 21 at 8:52PM
sunnyb : why should we beware? gullable person here, with paranoid tendencies
September 22 at 5:01AM
delephoto : @Badger - That was humor. Right?
September 22 at 7:37AM
Badger : dele, I am the joke!
