This pastel drawing is number 1 in a series of 6 created for the purpose of exalting the femininity and the beauty of women. In one form or another, women have been seen as special. Simply put, they are. Women create life and nurture life. Men spark and protect life, but women are the ones who grow, direct and nurture life. There are times I simply do the painting. There are times I map out the painting in pencil or charcoal. And there are times I map the painting with pencil, do color shading and detail enhancement with pastels to be able to see the painting before it becomes one. This series is such a time as I am striving to make this series a stunning honor of the essence of femininity. After I finished all the pastels in this series I decided to keep them as pastels simply because I liked them and feared that turning them into oil paintings I would kill the immediate rather rough vibrancy I had with the soft pastel approach. Over time I have developed a process of using soft pastels on canvas that definitely does not look like a soft pastel but not quite like an oil painting. The decorated gold frames are usually an online buy from Hobby Lobby and usually need to be repaired from the shipping ordeal. I repair the frames, mostly the corners with white glue, primer paint and spackle. I work the spackle with a small knife to reform the plaster decorative pieces. I use an air gun to reinforce the corners. I then spray paint them the color I want, in this case gold, and then had rub them with an oil color I think will augment and enhance the picture. The pictures are then attached with the frames being wired for hanging. They are then boxed away until a showing.
I posted these six in reverse order so the viewer can see them in order of 1 to 6 on my portfolio page.
