The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in Hot Springs, SD is home to one of America's largest wild horse herds. Over 500 wild horses including American Spanish Mustangs, Sulphur and Kiger Mustangs, herds from State Governments, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service land make their home on 11,000 acres in the pristine Black Hills of South Dakota. The wild horse herds graze on prairie grasses and water in the Cheyenne River that winds through wild canyon lands in the heart of it. The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, founded by Dayton O. Hyde, is about helping any wild horse in need! Support for the wild horse herds comes from revenues generated from visitors each year, gift shop sales, grants, donations, foal sales from the herd horses: which include wild horse foals, mustang foals and foals from the registered AQHA, and APHA bands. Check out their web site at www.wildmustangs.com.

Out on the open range are over 400 wild mustangs running free. They come in all colors and all sizes. This was just two of the ones that I saw. I thought they were beautiful the way they looked so much alike and were grazing together. If they become friends while they are young and remain free, they will be friends for life. These two must have grown up together. Taken with a hand held Nikon D80 camera.
