The Coatimundi[ Nasua Narica] aka White-nosed Coati, Tejon de Manada, Pisote, Cuchucho and its Mayan name Chi'ik Ch'we are members of the Raccoon family roaming from northern Mexico to northern South America. It has different shades of brown with grayish or yellowish shoulders and white muzzle, chin and throat. It get 18 to 24 inches plus a ringed tail from about the same length as the animal and weight to about 8 pounds.
The Coatimundis live in families of about eight to forty members. They travel together and are known for their social behavior. The will fiercely protect each other in danger. An oft told story in our region tells that a group of Coatimundis started attacking and biting a Boa who captured a member of the band. Although they weren't able to puncture the Skin of the boa with their small teeth the kept fighting until they frightened the Boa away. I don't know if it is true but it sounds possible.
When traveling through the jungle, the may growl, grunt or woof to keep predators away. In real danger as Hawk, Boa, Jaguar and other predators The Coatis climb trees and hung on. It is said that they 'turn to stone' until the danger passed. They guy in the picture is an outlook. The rest of the band is hidden thorough the woods.
